BUTLER 84, INTERNATIONAL SELECT ALL STARS 67

[BUTLER LOGO]

The Bulldogs wrapped up the preseason 2-0 with an 84-67 victory over the International Select All-Stars. This game looked much better than Butler's other preseason game. They jumped out to a 16-0 lead and never looked back. They also led off the second half with a 10-0 run. Early hot shooting from LaVall Jordan and Michael Hicks got things rolling, and 5 Dawgs ended up in double digits. Jordan led the way with 24, followed by Mike Marshall and Thomas Jackson with 13. Hicks and Rylan Hainje added 12 points each. The long ball was kind to our boys, as they drained 7 3-pointers. I was particularly impressed by the performance of freshman Joel Cornette. He only scored 4 points, but he had a lot of rebounds and was soaring above the rim all afternoon. He's definitely one to watch this season.

On the down side, Mike Moore continues to disappoint. He missed a point-blank lay-in, got his own rebound, and missed another bunny on the put-back. He looks very timid, and at 6'10" should be ramming that stuff home and not looking back. Hopefully he'll come around, but if he doesn't show some improvement he won't be seeing much floor time this season. Also, our front line got in a lot of foul trouble. We had 10 fouls at the 13:00 mark in the second half. Cornette fouled out, Hicks and Hainje had 4 each, and Marshall had 3. They'll need to do a better job of staying out of foul trouble during the season.

The following players did not dress for the game: Ryan Murray, Ben Grunst, Scott Robisch, and Luke Reed. It appears that Grunst will be red-shirted this season, which I kind of expected. Evidently Reed suffered an elbow injury about a month ago and is on the mend.

Butler's next action will be the regular season opener at UNC-Wilmington on November 23 at 7:30 pm.
