DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

All the progress we made during the beginning of this road trip flew out the window in the second half of this game. We were a defensive no-show, couldn't score to save our lives, blew a 12 point halftime lead and lost a game we should easily have won. We were in control for the first 20 minutes, led by LaVall Jordan's 20 first half points. We went into the locker room leading 34-22 and seemed to be ready to walk away with this one. But the host Broncos were the aggressors in the second half, and quickly erased the halftime deficit by outscoring us 18-4 to take a 40-38 lead with 10:35 to go. The game see-sawed from there. We were able to regain a 4-point lead, but blew that. With the score tied at 54 with 46 ticks left, Mike Marshall hit one of two free throws to give us a 55-54 lead. SCU turned the ball over, and things were looking good. They fouled Jordan, and sent him to the line for a crucial one-and-one. LaVall hit the front end, but missed the second shot and left us up by only 2 with 19 seconds left. The Broncos came down, worked the ball around, and Brian Jones nailed a 3-pointer with 5 seconds to go to give them the lead and the game. LaVall Jordan had a chance to win it with a 3 at the buzzer, but it was no good. Coach Barry Collier summed it up best in the post game show when he said that we got what we deserved. Not to take anything away from SCU, because they obviously wanted it more than we did. But there is absolutely no reason for the defensive meltdown we had in the second half. We should have pounded this team, and until we figure out how to put weaker teams away on the road, we won't be able to reach our full potential. Collier hinted at a possible shake-up of the starting lineup, so we'll see if he follows through on that

There were a couple positive performances. First and foremost was a career night by LaVall Jordan. LJ was looking like MJ in the first half with 20 points on 7-10 shooting. He cooled off a bit in the second half, but finished with a career high 26 points to lead all scorers. Mike Marshall added 7 points and 9 rebounds. But perhaps the biggest surprise was the play of Mike Moore. He came off the bench in the first half and had 5 points, including a nifty 3 point play in the paint. Moore has struggled so far, but his effort last night was promising.

The 4 game road trip mercifully comes to an end on Monday, January 3, when the Dawgs travel to Tennessee-Martin. This is another team we should have no problem with, so hopefully we can shake off this last game and take care of business. Game time is 8:00 EST. Have a safe and happy new year.
