DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Pathetic...absolutely pathetic. Not to downplay UTM's effort, but to blow a 10 point halftime lead, fight back, and then blow ANOTHER 10 point lead in the last 84 SECONDS is inexcusable. Coach Collier stopped short of calling this game the low point of the season, but unless someone holds us scoreless at Hinkle for a half, I can't think of a lower point that this team could reach. Keep in mind that UTM hadn't won a game against a D-I opponent coming in. They were ranked #290 out of 319 in the Sagarin ratings. We continue to be terrible on the road. A week ago, after defeating TCU for our first road win, I was fairly sure we were over the hump away from Hinkle. But we are no better now than we were when we dropped the season opener at UNCW. This is NOT how we should be entering conference play. There are far too many questions yet to be answered about this team, and we are in SERIOUS need of a gut-check.

There were a couple bright spots. Thomas Jackson played with a ton of heart, finishing with 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. Darnell Archey broke out of his shooting slump with a 4-6 performance from downtown en route to 12 points. But there were far too many negatives to outweigh their performances. We were outrebounded 27-24 by a team whose tallest player was 6'6". We were 8-15 from the line in the second half, and choked hard in the last couple of minutes. Scott Robisch started for the first time all year, and had 10 points on 4-5 shooting, but couldn't muster a single rebound in 23 minutes. Our big men overall were terrible. Excluding Joel Cornette's 7 rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench, our frontline grabbed 5 rebounds in a combined 62 minutes. Rylan Hainje has suddenly disappeared, mired in a shooting slump. Mike Marshall continues to have problems staying out of foul trouble.

Conference play begins Saturday, January 8, when the Wright State Raiders invade Hinkle Fieldhouse. If you've been under a rock for the past week or so, this is the same WSU team that upset nationally ranked Michigan State last week. We are undefeated at home, but we will need to bring our A-game to beat this up-and-coming team. Game time is 2:00. Hope to see you there.
