DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

"Revenge Tour 2000" got off to a proper start as the Butler Bulldogs avenged last year's overtime loss to Eastern Illinois by beating the Panthers 90-73 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in the season opener for both teams. Thad Matta won his head coaching debut, and even got called for his first technical foul at 11:08 in the first half. It was a tale of 2 halves, with Eastern Illinois out-hustling the Bulldogs in the first 20 minutes. The Panthers held an 8 point lead at 29-21, but Butler fought back to within one at halftime, 40-39. There were plenty of whistles to go around, as the 2 teams combined for 26 fouls in the first half and 56 for the game. Eventually, foul trouble caught up with the Panthers, and they seemed to run out of gas. Butler took its first lead at 47-46 and widened it to 8, thanks to a 14-0 run. That was all they needed, as they tightened up the defense and never looked back.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sophomore transfer guard Brandon Miller. The former SW Missouri State Bear had a sparkling debut as a Bulldog, leading all scorers with 26 points. Miller also added 6 assists, was 14-16 at the free throw line, and I believe he also led the team in floor burns. He was everywhere, and gave Butler fans a nice glimpse of what he brings to the floor each night.

Thomas Jackson had 17 points, and Darnell Archey provided a nice spark off the bench with 11 points and three 3-pointers. Rylan Hainje was our top rebounder with 8. All in all 10 Bulldogs scored, including freshman walk-on Nick Gardner, whose last second 3-point attempt bounced high off the rim and straight back down and in to cap the evening.

The Bulldogs hit the road, heading to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on the Birmingham Southern Panthers. Game time is Monday, November 20, at 8:30 pm.
