DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

A match-up of 2 of Indiana's best mid-majors lived up to its billing, as Indiana State and Butler went into overtime before the host Sycamores pulled out a 90-88 victory. It was a back-and-forth struggle for most of the evening until Butler pulled out to a six point lead in the second half and appeared to be in control. But ISU battled back to tie things up. Butler had a chance to win in regulation, but Thomas Jackson missed a lay-in and Joel Cornette's follow was off the mark. In overtime, the Sycamores pushed out to a 5 point lead, but Jackson converted a lay-up off of a steal, and Brandon Miller hit a huge 3-pointer to knot things back up. ISU had the ball for what looked to be the final shot. The Bulldogs played great defense for all but the last few seconds of that possession, but that let down made the difference. Kelyn Block split two defenders at the top of the key, drove the lane uncontested, and made the game-winning lay-up with 3.3 seconds remaining. Butler had a good look at a potential game-winner at the buzzer, but Jackson's 3-point attempt hit the back of the rim and bounced out.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Rylan Hainje had another solid effort. He had 22 points and 7 rebounds, and was the only Bulldog to hit all of his free throws (more on that later). He's playing with a lot of confidence and intensity right now, and it's showing in the box score.

Honorable mention goes to Joel Cornette. I was wondering when he would start rebounding, and he answered my question. Joel had 9 rebounds along with 10 points and 3 steals in 42 minutes of play. Jackson finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists with just 1 turnover. LaVall Jordan added 16 points, and Miller finished with 11 points and 5 assists. Indiana State got an outstanding effort from Matt Renn, who finished with 28 points and 7 rebounds. Djibril Kante had 17 points (7-7 FG) and 6 rebounds, and Michael Menser added 17 points and 11 assists.

Just like the Evansville loss, we shot the ball extremely well on the road (55%), which should be more than enough to get the win. Unfortunately, we allowed our opponents to shoot 61%. Their front line just murdered us, with the duo of Renn and Kante combining for 45 points on 17-20 shooting. That's unacceptable. The loss of Scott Robisch is obviously hurting our front line depth, but we should be able to hold the opposing big men to under 85% from the field. The other difference in this game was free throw shooting. The host team converted 17-18 (94%), while we only managed to make half of our 14 attempts. Any one of those 7 missed free throws goes in, and we go home victorious in regulation. Particularly disheartening was our guard combination of Jackson and Miller combining for 5-9 at the line. That has to improve.

Despite these 2 disappointing losses, this season is far from over. We have 4 straight games in the friendly confines of Hinkle Fieldhouse, and we should be able to pound 3 of those teams into the ground. The first of that triumverate is UNC-Wilmington, who made the Big Dance last season. Butler lost at the buzzer at UNCW last season, and hopes to add another victory on "Revenge Tour 2000". The rematch is on Saturday, December 16, at 2 pm. Hope to see you there.

Mad props to Zippy for catching my typos.
