DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Butler held off a determined Loyola team down the stretch, defeating the host Ramblers 66-62. The Bulldogs once again jumped out to a quick lead, scoring the game's first 8 points. They pushed their first half lead to as much as 15 at 33-18, and headed into the locker room up 36-24. They came out smoking again in the second half, pushing the lead to 45-28. But then the Ramblers went on an 11-0 run and cut the lead to 6. They closed to within 4 at 47-43 before Thomas Jackson and LaVall Jordan hit a pair of three's which helped push the lead back to 56-45. Loyola ran their offense to near perfection to close out the game, but came up just short as Butler was able to seal the game at the free throw line. A valiant effort from the Ramblers, but they suffered yet another heart-breaking loss.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: LaVall Jordan. Vall scored a season-high 23 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. He also pulled down 6 rebounds. He scored 5 straight at one point in the second half to give Butler a little breathing room. They wound up needing every point they could get.

Jackson added 17 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists, and hit three big 3-pointers himself. Joel Cornette was again a monster on the boards, pulling down 10 rebounds to go along with 5 points. Brandon Miller had 9 points, and Rylan Hainje added 7. Loyola was led by Schin Kerr's 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Silvije Turkovic added 13 points off the bench.

In each half, Butler stretched their lead to 15 points (or more), and each time Loyola went on an 11-0 run to get right back into the game. At this point in the season, I'll take the win and not worry too much about how it looked. But come tourney time, we need to protect our leads and take care of the ball. We got downright careless in the second half, and missed some free throws at inopportune times. Against Loyola, we perservered. Against Wisconsin-Milwaukee/Wright State/Detroit in the tournament, we may be heading home disappointed if we play like we did tonight at certain times. But I digress...we won, and that's all that matters. We did enough things down the stretch to ensure victory, and we kept our NCAA at-large bid hopes alive.

The regular season comes to a close this Saturday as the Bulldogs head south from Loyola to UIC. Game time is Saturday, February 24, at 4 pm EST. A victory will give the Bulldogs 20 wins heading into the MCC Tournament. The game will be broadcast on FoxSports Chicago.
