DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Top seed Butler used a 46-point second half to put away the eighth-seeded Loyola Ramblers 78-52 in the opening round of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference Tournament. The Bulldogs led 32-27 at halftime, but hot shooting and continued solid defense quickly pushed the lead to a comfortable margin. The Ramblers seemed to concede once the lead hit double digits, and never made a serious challenge in the second half.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Darnell Archey. The sophomore super sub had 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range. The offensive spark he provided in the second half helped the Bulldogs take control of the game.

As usual, Butler had a balanced attack. Brandon Miller scored 14 points and dished out 3 assists. Joel Cornette added 11 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. LaVall Jordan finished with 10 points. Thomas Jackson had 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. Rylan Hainje added 8 points and 6 rebounds. Loyola was led by David Bailey's 21 points.

Butler coasted through the end of this game, resting many of the starters for the final 4 or 5 minutes. It was nice to see them avoid a lackluster opening round effort that could have led to a costly loss. They took care of business, and lived to see the next day.

Butler's next opponent in the conference tourney is Wright State, the host school. Game time is Saturday, March 3, at 5 pm EST.
