PLAYER OF THE GAME: Thomas Jackson. TJ matched a career high with 25 points on 7-of-10 shooting, and added 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Just as important was his defensive effort against LU's David Bailey. Bailey, the MCC's 2nd leading scorer, scored just 10 points and committed an uncharacteristic 6 turnovers before fouling out.
Butler's other double digit scorer was LaVall Jordan, who overcome an 0-for-5 first half start to finish with 17 points and 4 rebounds. Joel Cornette had 9 points and 5 rebounds, and Rylan Hainje added 4 points and 6 rebounds. Duane Lightfoot had yet another game that doesn't look that huge on paper, but was key to the victory. His 3 offensive rebounds in 7 minutes each came at times when Butler needed to maintain possession and hold off a Loyola comeback. Scott Robisch struggled from the field in his second game back, but managed 2 rebounds and 2 blocks in 12 minutes. Loyola was led by Schinn Kerr's 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Our shooting percentage concerns me, especially heading up to Madison on Tuesday. We normally have no problems at home, but recently the 40% mark has been a challenge for us. Our offense works best when we move the ball around to find an open shot. Today we spent a lot of time dribbling and not enough time passing. Against Wisconsin, we either have to be patient on offense, or shoot an unconscious percentage, because their defense is #1 in the nation, and points will be hard to come by. Being impatient and settling for perimeter shots will make for a long evening.
Butler travels to Madison to play the Wisconsin Badgers on Tuesday, January 30, at 9 pm EST. I believe the game will be available on satellite.
