DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held the nation's #1 scoring offense to nearly 30 points under its average, defeating TCU 86-73 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The final score was a near carbon copy of last year's 86-78 Butler victory at TCU. The Horned Frogs came in averaging over 101 points per game, but were forced to play a half-court game by Butler's defense. TCU shot 55% for the game, but turned the ball over 21 times, got out-rebounded 32-17, and only made it to the free throw line 9 times, hitting just 5. Butler on the other hand got to the line 32 times, hitting 25. 26 of those attempts came in the second half, when the Frogs decided it was much easier to just hack people rather than play 35 seconds of half court defense. After Wednesday's record setting performance from 3-point range, the Frogs may have been expecting more of a perimeter attack from Butler. While the Dawgs did go 11-24 from downtown, the majority of their points came from closer to the hoop.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Thomas Jackson. TJ showed us he can still penetrate and create, either by scoring or dishing to a teammate. He finished with 19 points, 4 assists, and 2 steals, and was a perfect 6-6 from the line. Only one of his six buckets was a 3-pointer, as he spent a great deal of time beating his defender to the hoop.

Once again, it was far from a one-man show for Butler. LaVall Jordan continued his solid play, scoring 18 points and dishing 3 assists. He was 4-7 from 3-point range, and 4-4 from the free throw line. Rylan Hainje chipped in 15 points and 6 rebounds. Brandon Miller added 10 points and 5 assists. Joel Cornette had a big game inside, with 9 points and 9 rebounds (5 of those being on the offensive end). A pair of first-year Bulldogs continue to play well off the bench. Freshman Duane Lightfoot had 4 points and 4 rebounds in 9 minutes, and sophomore Rob Walls hit all three of his 3-point attempts for 9 points. All in all, a solid team effort. TCU was led by Ryan Carroll with 18 points.

Where does this leave the Bulldogs? Hopefully the 3-game losing streak is a distant memory, as the Dawgs seem to have honed their game at each end of the floor. Ball movement on offense has improved greatly--people seem more content with making the extra pass to find the open man, rather than just settling for a jumper. On defense, we look more like the Bulldogs of old. We're quicker on rotations, we're running opponents deeper into the shot clock, and we're doing all of this while staying out of foul trouble.

The Bulldogs hit the road for the next 2 games, heading to Tucson, AZ, for the Bank One Fiesta Bowl Classic. Game one is as tough as it gets--the Arizona Wildcats on their home floor. Game time is Thursday, December 28, at 8:30 Eastern.
