DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Butler climbed into a 3-way tie for first place in the MCC by defeating UIC 76-69 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Flames came into the game in sole possession of first, but fell back into a tie for 4th with Detroit. The highlight of this game for Butler fans was the return of Scott Robisch to the floor. Robisch, out since early November with a patellar tendon tear, played 17 minutes in his first action since the NCAA tournament in March. After suffering through two miserable starts in Wisconsin, the Bulldogs made sure they kept themselves out of a hole in this game. A 2-2 tie was as close as the Flames would ever get to leading. A balanced inside/outside attack helped Butler get the win, overcoming a 62% shooting effort by UIC in the second half.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Robisch. He wasn't a statistical leader in this game, but his presence was felt by everyone. In his first game in over 10 months, he had 6 points and 6 rebounds. The rust was evident in his 2-of-8 shooting performance, but once he gets his legs back, we should see more of the #40 we saw last year.

4 Bulldogs finished in double digits. Leading the way was Thomas Jackson, who had 21 points and took control of the game down the stretch. LaVall Jordan had 15 points and 5 rebounds. The frontline, perhaps bolstered by Robisch's presence, was phenomenal. Joel Cornette had 12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks, and 3 steals. He also had a one-handed alley-oop at the end of the first half that he nearly picked out of the rafters. Hopefully Joel can maintain this aggressiveness and give us more games like this. Rylan Hainje added 9 points and 8 rebounds. Brandon Miller had a quiet scoring night with just 3 points, but dished out 7 assists with just one turnover and pulled down 4 rebounds. Off the bench, Darnell Archey tossed in 10 points, including a nifty 4-point play that gave Butler its largest lead of the game at 12 points in the second half. UIC was led by Maurice Brown's 16 points and 9 rebounds off the bench.

A lot of positives came out of this game: a better start, vastly improved front line play, and Robisch's return. But allowing UIC 40 second half points on 16-of-26 shooting concerns me. Only 2 of those shots were 3-pointers, and many of them came in the paint. Our defense needs to tighten up a bit and make some stops.

Next up for the Dawgs are the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Saturday, January 27, at 4 pm. The late start is due to the game being televised on FoxSports Midwest and FoxSports Chicago. Hope to see you there.
