DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Wisconsin-Green Bay snapped a 9-game losing streak against Butler, holding on for a 69-68 victory. Butler once again got off to a terrible start, scoring just 15 first-half points. We shot 24% from the field, including 2-of-12 from 3-point range. It went from bad to worse, as the game appeared to get out of hand in the second half. Green Bay extended their lead to 29 at 49-20. Then the host Phoenix appeared to set the cruise control and quit playing the solid defense and deliberate offense that got them out to such a large lead. Thad Matta benched four of his starters with about 8 minutes to go, leaving Brandon Miller on the floor, to be joined by Darnell Archey, Rob Walls, Ben Grunst, and Duane Lightfoot. Those five players played their hearts out, and slowly chipped the lead to 20, then 10, and eventually down to 1 point with about 18 seconds to go. Butler fouled Devante Blanks, who proceeded to brick both his free throws. Miller took the ball coast-to-coast, but suffered a leg cramp as he jumped for the potential game-winning layup. It bounced away, and the Phoenix escaped with the win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. I'd say he had a bad first half, but the whole team did. But his second half effort was phenomenal, and he very nearly led us to an unbelievable comeback. He finished with 24 points (20 in the second half), was 5-of-11 from 3-point range, 7-of-8 from the free throw line, dished out 5 assists, and pulled down 4 rebounds.

Honorable mention goes to the aforementioned bench players. Archey had 17 points on 5 3-pointers and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Walls finished with 7 points and a career high 6 rebounds. Lightfoot had 2 points, 2 steals, an assist and a rebound in 7 minutes. Grunst added 2 points and a rebound in 8 minutes.

This is starting to become a disturbing trend for us on the road. We get off to a terrible start, dig ourselves into a huge hole, then spend the rest of the game playing catch-up. At Wright State, we lost in the final seconds. Saturday against UW-Milwaukee, we were able to get the win. Tonight we once again came up 1 possession short. One more basket in that miserable first half, one less turnover, one more stop on defense, and the game is ours. We relied too heavily on the 3-point shot in the first half, and didn't play well enough on defense to keep ourselves in the game.

Butler returns home for 2 MCC games. First up is UIC, who is now in sole possession of first place in the conference with Butler's loss. Game time is Thursday, January 25, at 7 pm. Hope to see you there.
