PLAYER OF THE GAME: Joel Cornette. Sure, he airballed 3 free throws. But he nailed the other 6 en route to 16 points and 6 rebounds. He had a wicked one-handed put back dunk in the final minute that put an exclamation point on the game.
LaVall Jordan had 17 points and 6 rebounds despite being limited to just 24 minutes due to foul trouble. Thomas Jackson added 11 points and 4 steals. Brandon Miller tossed in 8 points, and also had 4 steals. Rylan Hainje finished with 6 points and 6 rebounds, and Darnell Archey added 8 points off the bench. Wright State was led by Kevin Melson's 16 points in what may very well have been his final game as a Raider.
Defense kept the Bulldogs close until the offense could take the lead away from Wright State. Butler forced 25 turnovers, and limited Raider sharpshooter (and MCC Newcomer of the Year) Jesse Deister to 12 points on just 4-of-15 shooting. The Bulldogs survived a determined effort from a talented Raider team on its home floor in front of thousands of rowdy fans. That's something to build on heading into the championship game.
Speaking of the championship, Butler and Detroit will square off yet again on ESPN. It marks the third straight year that the Bulldogs and Titans will meet in the finals, and the fifth straight year where the champion will be one of those 2 schools. They have clearly proved themselves to be the two premiere squads in the conference. Game time is Tuesday, March 6, at 7:05 pm EST. As always, the MCC Championship will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.
