DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back in blowing out the Birmingham-Southern Panthers 70-34 at Hinkle. BSC scored its first basket at the 12:25 mark in the first half, and never seriously threatened the Bulldogs. Butler led 37-14 at halftime, holding the Panthers to just 17% shooting. It was more of the same in the second frame, with Butler pushing its lead out to as much 40 before a late 10-0 run by BSC cut it to 30. But Butler walk-ons Nick Gardner and Ryan Reynolds each hit a late 3-pointer to establish the final score.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Monserez. After starting the season shooting a miserable 15% from the field, the transfer from Notre Dame broke out of his shooting slump in a big way. He nailed three straight shots from 3-point range in the first half and finished 5-of-7 from downtown for the game. He also hit his only 2-point attempt, which added up to a 17-point game when all was said and done--in just 17 minutes. I think Mike will show as the season progresses that his shooting woes at the start of the season were the exception and not the rule.

All 13 Bulldogs who dressed for the game played, and 11 scored. Rylan Hainje was the only other double digit scorer for Butler, finishing with 11 points and 4 rebounds. Darnell Archey had 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists on the bench. Scott Robisch finished with 6 points and 7 rebounds. Rob Walls added 6 points and 4 rebounds. Other stat lines for Butler: Thomas Jackson (5 points, 4 assists, 3 steals); Mike Moore (5 points); Joel Cornette (4 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists); Reynolds (3 points); Gardner (3 points); Brandon Miller (2 points, 5 rebounds). BSC was led by Rashard Willie's 7 points and Shema Mbyirukira's 11 rebounds.

Usually it's tough to find a lot of positives in such a lopsided victory, but I think there were more than a handful that can be found. First would be Monserez' shooting. There was also concern as to how Butler would respond after a big win at Purdue, but they showed right from the start that there would be no chance of a let-down. Coach Todd Lickliter was able to rest his starters (TJ played 39 minutes at Purdue), and in doing so was also able to get an extended look at his reserves in game situations. And after a pair of games where the Bulldogs were relatively quiet from 3-point range, it was good to see the longball dropping again.

Butler won't have much time to savor the win, as they will head down to Nashville for a Monday night game against the Lipscomb Bisons. Game time is Monday, December 3, at 8:30 EST.
