DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs completed a regular season sweep of the Cleveland State Vikings with a 70-45 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. CSU led early 3-2, but over the next six minutes the Bulldogs built a 10-point lead at 19-9. The Vikings pulled to within six at 20-14, but would get no closer. Butler led 37-25 at halftime, getting 10 assists on 12 field goals. The big stat of the first half was 3-point shooting: Butler was 8-of-18 from behind the arc in the opening frame, forcing CSU head coach Rollie Massimino to take his team out of a zone defense and play man-to-man. Butler responded by pounding the ball inside in the second half, taking only four 3-point shots in the second 20 minutes. Rylan Hainje and Joel Cornette combined for 19 second half points, including Butler first 13 points of the half. On three different occasions, Brandon Miller fed Cornette on cuts to the hoops for easy baskets. The offense really moved the ball well and found the open man. The Vikings never seriously challenged the Bulldogs in the second half, and Butler pushed its lead out to as many as 27 at 70-43 before a pair of CSU free throws made the final score 70-45.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hainje. After a fairly quiet game against Detroit on Thursday where Rylan never seemed to get into the flow offensively, he was everywhere today. The senior had a double-double, finishing with game-high totals in points (25) and rebounds (10). He was 10-of-16 from the field, 2-of-3 from downtown, and had two steals. A very solid all-around effort from #42.

Miller was Butler's other double-digit scorer, finishing with 15 points to go along with six assists. He was 4-of-8 from 3-point range and pulled down six rebounds for good measure. Thomas Jackson had nine points (all in the second half) to go along with seven assists and three steals. He did commit four turnovers, two coming on offensive foul calls for pushing off against sticky CSU defenders. Cornette added eight points, as did fellow junior Darnell Archey. Mike Monserez hit four free throws for four points. Nick Gardner had three rebounds and a block in four minutes. CSU was led by Jermaine Robinson's 12 points.

I must say I was confused by some of coach Massimino's decisions. It seemed to me he stuck with the zone WAY too long in the first half. What was so different about the eighth 3-pointer that finally convinced him to go to a man defense that he didn't see in the previous seven? He kept leading scorers Jamaal Harris and Theo Dixon (seniors averaging over 30 points per game combined coming into today's game) on the bench for most of the second half. Asked about Dixon's absence after the game and whether or not it had to do with his defensive effort, Rollie merely replied, "It was just my decision." The man has one more NCAA championship than I'll ever win, but it seems to me that if you're having trouble scoring points (and CSU scored just 20 in the second half), it would make sense to put your two best scorers in the game.

Butler's 16 turnovers were a bit high, but that's about the only negative to be found for the Bulldogs in this game. They outrebounded CSU 29-21, forced them into 21 turnovers, and had 17 assists on 22 baskets. It was quite a solid effort at both ends of the floor by the Bulldogs.

Next on the Horizon League schedule for Butler is a trip to Brown County Arena to face the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix. UWGB has struggled this season, but Brown County is always a tough place to play. Butler lost up there a year ago 69-68, a game where the Bulldogs managed just 15 first-half points and trailed by as many as 29 in the second half before a feverish comeback fell just short. Game time is Thursday, February 14, at 8 p.m. EST.

treadhead from Birmingham, England:
Thomas Jackson is the Jedi Knight of college basketball.
after a couple of games with distractions in the middle of the first half
of the season he is as focused as ever and has the juice to carry this
team in a spiritual sort of way. No one needs to carry them physically
but every good team needs a lightpost to keep focused on . He is truly
gifted in his focus.
WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
Dave's dissect on Rollie was spot on. In my last post I asked for
Massanova to throw in the towel early like he did at CSU, and I guess it
just goes to show that if you ask, you will receive. Nice coaching.
With the physical talent (plenty of ups and speed) the Vikings have, I can
understand how frustrating (see FireRollie.com) it would be to remain a
CSU fan. We are so lucky at BU to have coaches who get the most out of
players by encouraging them to give their all and to be satisfied with
nothing less. I was so proud of our team this week, we hustled as if
it was the last game of the year, diving for loose balls, hitting the
boards, running the floor, making the extra pass and winning the Butler
Way. Who would not like this team? I'm not going to cry for some
national pub, lets remain under the radar, where we do our best work, and
just get it done.

Now that I can get off my Mike Moore soapbox, I may have to start
begging to see more of Lew Curry. If he could get a few minutes
(consecutively please) I think he could do some damage. He has a nice touch with
the pumpkin and looks to be unafraid of physical contact. It appears
that he hit the weight room since making the trip down I-69, and like all
Ghost Riders of the Pine, he is hungry. My last plea is a question.
Am I the only person who would love to see Rob Walls take off and jam in
the game like he does in warmups?

Great effort against UDM and CSU, loved the hustle and the crisp
passing. I would sure love to see one more thing, and that's barn busting
crowds for the final two home games. This team is 22-3 (can anybody else
in the state claim that?) and these seniors have given a lot, I hope
that they will hear it from the fans against YSU and UIC. This is old
fashioned hoops in an old fashioned arena (that skybox story can NOT be
real) and I for one have really enjoyed this season. Way to go Dogs,
let's bring it on home!
