DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs rebounded nicely from their first loss of the season with a 62-45 Horizon League win at Cleveland State. The game was fairly even for the first ten minutes, with CSU leading 9-8 for what seemed like several minutes. Butler missed its first nine 3-point attempts en route to a 4-of-17 start, but settled down and became more patient on offense. It was 12-10 Vikings when Brandon Miller and Thomas Jackson hit consecutive 3-pointers to give Butler a 16-12 lead, one it would never relinquish. Cleveland State (7-7, 1-2 HL) answered with a basket, but that was as close as they would get. Butler rattled off eight straight points to push the lead out to ten at 24-14, and would head into the locker room with a 34-20 advantage. After the cold start, Butler hit 11-of-13 to close the half, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range. The Bulldogs (14-1, 1-1) picked up where they left off to start the second half, scoring six straight to push the lead out to 20 at 40-20. The lead would fluctuate between 16 and 25 for the rest of the game, with a late 8-0 run by the CSU bench closing the final margin down to 17, 62-45.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Scott Robisch. Robo pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds to go along with 7 points. His efforts helped give the Bulldogs a 45-35 advantage on the boards.

The five starters all played solid games. Rylan Hainje had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Jackson also finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds to go along with 6 assists. Joel Cornette had 12 points and 5 rebounds before fouling out. Miller added 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 steals. Darnell Archey hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points off the bench. Mike Monserez missed the only two shots he took, but pulled down a pair of rebounds and dished 3 assists to go along with solid defense. Cleveland crowd favorite Pete Ritzema tied a career-high with seven points late for the Vikings.

The offense got off to a slow start again, much like against Wright State, but this time the Bulldogs played patiently, let open shots come naturally through the flow of the offense rather than forcing up quick shots, and they started to fall midway through the first half. Constant throughout the up's and down's of the offense was Butler's defense, holding the Vikings to 31% shooting for the game and just 19% from 3-point range. CSU head coach Rollie Massimino was so fed up with his starters that he benched most of them for the bulk of the second half.

Jackson and Hainje continue their respective climbs up the all-time lists at Butler. With six assists tonight, Jackson now has 464 for his career, just seven behind Tim Bowen's 471 for first place all-time. Hainje now has 1,131 points, good for #21 all-time behind Tom Orner's 1,134. Jackson's 1,111 points put him at #23, just behind Ken Pennington's 1,117. Congratulations to both of them as they continue to make Butler history.

Butler can't afford to enjoy this victory too long, because a trip to Calihan Hall to face their arch-rivals, the Detroit Titans, is just around the corner. Detroit has won 35 straight games at Calihan, but the Bulldogs were the last team to defeat them at home, a 59-46 win in 1999. Will Butler victories be the bookends to one of the longest winning streaks in the nation, or will the Titans shake off an 0-2 HL start and defend their home floor? Game time is Thursday, January 10, at 8:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on FoxSports Midwest and FoxSports Detroit. Check your cable or satellite listings.

I couldnt see the game - had to listen to it on the radio... But I
wish the dogs would put a complete game together!! Ever since the BSU
Game, things haven't been the same. (granted I coldnt watch tonight) I
havent seen the same ball rotation, extra passes, or open looks for a
while now! Its no wonder that the games, with the exception of tonight's
game, have all been close. Why, all of a sudden, do the dogs feel that
they have to use more isolation plays, and one on one offense?? I
just hope they get back to the "Butler ball" that has been so good to
them!!

Lets go dogs...

When it was 8-9 Vikings and we couldn't get anything outside of three
feet to go in, I had visions of one of those ugly grinders that we have
been trapped in at times. I seem to remember one of those awful Cable
Car games, as well as a couple of Loyolas which were like that,
terrible shooting by everybody leading to high school scoring without the
screaming teenagers. The good news was regaining our shooting touch and
rolling them up a bit before Rollie waved the white flag just after
halftime. That was as generous as any Sunset League coach has been to BU in
recent memeory and I hope we get to return the favor a couple more
times this year.

I had every confidence that this team would turn it around immediately
and they did. A veteran team realizes the importance of this road trip
and handles themselves with composure in hostile arenas. This will be
vital against Detroit who has the home winning streak for a good
reason. There has in the past been more than a bit of what might charitably
be called "player hating" by the Titan faithful. I am hoping that we
stay focused on the task at hand and keep our heads in the game for the
full 40. Of course, if the crowd would refrain from hurling the
f-bombs, various assaults on heritage and other assorted verbal and physical
debris it would be nice, but I'm not counting on it.

Great win in Cleveland with some time off for the Iron 5+2. We need
these cats on the bench to get on the court and thankfully Rollie helped
us out by bailing out with 17 minutes to go, even better that it came
on the road. I'd love to see them get in the game against Detroit and
contribute like I think they can. With the kind of team players we
have, the bench could go super deep and would make us quite scary.

Should be a good game in the Motor, come on Blue.
