DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Butler completed the "revenge" portion of its schedule with a 61-48 win over Detroit. With the win, the Bulldogs have now avenged each of their three defeats on the season, and coupled with a Wisconsin-Milwaukee loss at UIC tonight, have climbed back into a first-place tie with UWM in the Horizon League. Both teams played fairly even through the first 20 minutes, with Butler taking a 37-31 lead at the half. It was tied at 25 apiece before Thomas Jackson scored Butler's next 10 points as part of a 12-6 run to close the opening frame. Detroit's Greg Grays hit a jumper to start the second half and pull the Titans within four, but that was as close as they would get. Over the next 11-plus minutes, Butler outscored Detroit 21-7 to take a 58-40 lead with 7:56 to go. The Titans pulled to within 13 at 58-45, and each team would score three more points to set the final margin.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jackson. Detroit head coach Perry Watson called TJ the "trump" in this game, noting not only his game-high 22 points, but the defense he played on Detroit's leading scorer Greg Grays, who finished with 13 points on 4-of-15 shooting. Thomas had four steals and four rebounds, and also dished out three assists, giving him an even 500 assists for his career. That makes him the first player in Butler history to have 1,000 points and 500 assists. Congratulations to TJ on yet another remarkable accomplishment.

Thomas was the only Bulldog in double figures, but he certainly had plenty of help. Scott Robisch finished with eight points. Joel Cornette added seven points, six rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocked shots. Rylan Hainje finished with six points, six rebounds, and three assists. Brandon Miller was held scoreless, but pulled down four rebounds to go along with two assists. Mike Moore provided a big boost off the bench, scoring six points and pulling down five rebounds in nine minutes of playing time. Mike Monserez hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points, and Darnell Archey and Nick Gardner each added a 3-pointer for three points apiece. Detroit was led by Willie Green's 14 points.

Watson noted afterwards that Detroit had been holding its opponents to 39% shooting coming into the game, so for Butler to finish at 52% from the floor was a testament to how hard the Bulldogs worked offensively. Coach Lickliter was impressed with his team's defense, particularly in the second half, when the Bulldogs held UDM to just 26% shooting. For the game, the Titans shot just 38%. The two things that hurt us the most in the loss at Detroit were a lack of offensive rhythm and the inability to make stops at key moments in the second half--tonight, the roles seemed reversed. About the only negative for Butler was Detroit's 12 offensive rebounds, but the Titans only out-rebounded the Bulldogs 30-29 overall.

With all three losses now avenged and the Bulldogs back in first place, they must now focus on winning one game at a time and continuing to build momentum heading into the home stretch in HL play. Up next is Rollie Massimino's Cleveland State squad, who comes to Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday, February 9, at noon EST. Hope to see you there.

WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
It looks like we are getting on one of our patented late season rolls,
hopefully this one will keep right on trucking through the MCC, er,
Sunset League tourney. Solid job by the Dogs against UDM, I was a bit
worried that they were going to hang around in the second half, because
they made so many tough shots in the first. One of the reasons we
couldn't shake them was the fact that they were dropping in shots from all
over, and most were very well defended. Hats off to Green, Riggs and
Grays for hitting some difficult buckets. My worries were laid to rest
when I looked up at the scoreboard in the second half and saw that we had
held them to 5 points in the first 8 minutes, a solid defensive effort.

TJ was, as usual, superb. I wish I had a dime for every time I have
leaned over to someone sitting in our section and said, "We're going to
miss that guy", just like I did last year when talking about LaVall.
Joel showed a couple of nice flashes to the hoop, and I continue to think
that he could be a real offensive threat. Can you imagine the open
looks that our sharpshooters would get if he consistently drew a double?
Scary.

You know that I have to get on my soapbox about Mike Moore. He showed
exactly what I thought he could against UDM, a solid effort with lots
of hustle, good defense, hard work on the boards and a few opportunity
points. Is this guy going to lead the league in scoring? Obviously
not, but he has the one thing that I value above all others. Desire. He
simply busts his butt on every play, and while he's not the fastest
Bulldog, he runs downcourt as fast as his feet will let him every time. I
won't dwell on the fact that Walls, Curry and Lightfoot might as well
have had their dress clothes on underneath their warmups, and be
thankful that we won. As for the other reserves, Arch looks 100% more active,
Monserez continues to impress with the feeds into the post and Gardner
hit a big three, although he appeared a bit overmatched at times on the
defensive end.

While we got a little bit of help from the Flamers (how does it taste
Mr. Pearl?) we need to keep focused on the task at hand, and that's
forcing Rollie to wave the white flag again three minutes in to the second
half. Great crowd Thursday night that was into the whole game, lets
fill up the barn on Saturday and take this thing home. Go Dogs!!!!
