UWGB's Aaron Jessup scored off the inbounds play to start the second half, but Butler answered with an 8-0 run. Butler took its biggest lead of the half at 55-49, but a 7-0 Green Bay run quickly erased it. The Phoenix led by three on two occasions, the last at 68-65. Brandon Miller, Monserez, and Hainje each hit 3-pointers as part of a 9-2 BU run to give the Bulldogs a 74-70 lead. Both teams hit a pair of free throws to make it 76-72 with around 1:30 to go. DeVante Blanks missed a jumper with a minute to go, but Thomas Jackson committed a turnover followed by a foul. Blanks hit both free throws with 41.4 seconds remaining to cut Butler's lead in half, 76-74. Hainje made a pass that Monserez wasn't quite ready for, resulting in a turnover and giving UWGB the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead. Monserez redeemed himself at the other end with a steal with 2.9 seconds remaining. Mike made one of two free throws and UWGB got the rebound, setting up the final play with 2.4 to go. After three timeouts, UWGB got the ball in to Blanks, but his desperation 3-pointer missed the mark and the Bulldogs came away with a 77-74 victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Hainje. Rylan had a relatively quiet first half with just five points, but scored 15 in the second half. He was also the vocal leader for the Bulldogs on the floor in the second half, taking charge and rallying his teammates. Hainje had seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Miller joined Hainje for team-high scoring honors with 20 points of his own along with three assists. Robisch finished with 11 points (all in the first half) including three 3-pointers. Jackson added 11 points, four assists, and three steals. Joel Cornette had eight points and two steals. Monserez scored seven points and three assists off the bench. UWGB was led by Blanks' game-high 22 points.
The win at Detroit obviously energized the Phoenix, because this was a far cry from the team that scored just 41 points at Hinkle last month. They had 39 in the first half alone tonight on 14-of-20 shooting (70%), and finished at 63%. But to the Bulldogs' credit, they withstood every UWGB run, shot 55% themselves, and did enough down the stretch to get the win. Thankfully, with a new facility being constructed next door set to open next season, this marks the final time Butler will have to play at Brown County.
The Bulldogs return home for a game against the newest member of the conference, Youngstown State. The Penguins come to Hinkle on Saturday, February 16, at noon EST. The game will be televised on FoxSports Midwest and FoxSports Ohio. Hope to see you there.
