The Phoenix pulled out to a seven-point advantage at 32-25, but Butler went on an 11-0 run to lead 36-32 with 7:38 to go. UWGB had the ball trailing 42-40 when Butler's Joel Cornette blocked a shot and Miller nailed a 3-pointer at the other end to put the Bulldogs up 45-40. Mike Monserez hit a 3-pointer at the 1:48 mark to give Butler a 48-40 lead, one which seemed safe at that point. But UWGB's Greg Babcock got a quick dunk, Monserez missed a quick three, and Matt Rohde hit a pair of free throws to make it 48-44. Aaron Jessup made a shot at the other end and fouled out Hainje in the process. Jessup hit the free throw to make it 48-47. Jackson missed the front end of his one-and-one, and DeVante Blanks drove the lane and hit a lay-up to regain the lead at 49-48 with 3.4 seconds remaining. Miller had a 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it bounced away.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Jackson. TJ was very quiet in this game until his buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the first half. That seemed to snap him out of his offensive funk, as he scored 13 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 16 points. He also had three assists.
Hainje added 11 points and seven rebounds before fouling out, and Miller also finished with 11 points. Monserez and Darnell Archey each hit a 3-pointer off the bench for three apiece. Cornette had a basket for two points, and Moore added two points. UWGB was led by Jessup's 15 points, 13 in the second half.
It was revealed after the game that Rob Walls' mother passed away last night, so obviously he and his teammates were playing with heavy hearts. My condolences to Rob and his family. Coach Lickliter refused to let that be an excuse, but it certainly had to be a factor in the team's mental state heading into the game. Free throw shooting down the stretch really hurt us: Miller missed the front end of a one-and-one and TJ missed two front ends. It's tough to win when you go scoreless for the last 1:48 of the game.
Now we wait until Selection Sunday to see if Butler can overcome its high RPI and get an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is on CBS on Sunday, March 10, at 6 p.m. EST. Cross your fingers...
I have had a hard time accepting some of the negative crap I have read (not here) on the BU basketball message board, to the point that I really don't want to participate anymore. As soon as we lost a game the negativity started to flow, and really has never let up since the double OT heartbreaker to Wright State. My only question to those who hammer down on the coaches and players is this. Do you honestly think that these people don't care? Can anyone imagine that the coaches and players weren't crushed by all that happened this weekend? These individuals work and prepare 365 days a year to reprsent Butler as best they can. They drive hard every day to better themselves, so they can achieve glory in athletic competition. In this season, twenty five times they have reaped success from the hard work they sowed, five times they have not. 25-5, regular season Horizon League champions, Hoosier Classic Champions, Top of the World Tournament Champions and the best season in Butler University history. That is a season to proud of, and if I had the chance, I would tell every memeber of the team and coaching staff how much fun I had watching them compete this year, it was a great ride. Did this team achieve perfection? Hardly. Aside from five losses, I saw more technicals and poor sportsmanship than I have seen in a long while at BU. I'm not being negative about that, but it is a fact and it bothers me. However, I reject the notion that this team is anything but a winner. High expectations and a red hot start caused some to think that the only logical conclusion was an undefeated season and trip to the Final 4. That didn't happen, but I hope that the bitter disppointment the teams feels now will be replaced by a desire to become better still, and eventually a sense of pride in a great accomplishment. We lost by a point to Florida, and at the time I was never lower after a loss becuase I felt we were on the verge of something great. Instead of backing down and fading away, the BU team became even better. We lost by a point to UWGB and I'm confident that we will find a way, maybe even a Butler Way, to turn a negative into a positive. I'm still behind this team all the way, just as I have been on many long road trips and cold nights in a near empty Hinkle. 25-5 will earn us an invitation to play somewhere in March, I hope that we do so with humility and respect for our opponents, whoever they may be. Congratulations are due to the coaches and players on a fine season, I still think that the best is yet to come. Go Dogs!!Ole Dawg from Chicago, IL
I read WarDog's comments. He is obviously a victim of political correctness. Please no one ever question your superiors, your coach or any of your fellow students. Get real! Coach Licklitter did a bad job down the stretch with this team. They stood around too much on offense (especially the big men). What's with running an offense where a sign is held up so that every player must look to the bench? The players did too much complaining and jawing with the refs. Just play the game and shut up!!! Sure we all proud of the team, but they could have done better with better leadership from the coach and the seniors. That being said, the team may put on their best game face for the tournament. Afterall, the Dawgs are undefeated in non-conference play. I too say Go Dawgs!WarDog from Indianapolis, IN
What's the proper response here, defend my opinions? Start tearing down the grammar in your post? Whatever it is, I'm not interested. I have enjoyed reading other fans opinions on the Dogs and sharing great memories of the team through the years, but I'm afraid this is my last post. The little sub culture of anonymous computer criticism has just grown tiresome. I'll do my cheering from the stands, Go Dogs!
