DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs started the 2001-2002 campaign with an exhibition win over Rose City GT Express, 89-56. The Bulldogs showed right from the start that just because they aren't using a 3-guard offense this season doesn't mean they won't shoot the three. Eight of Butler's first ten field goals made were from downtown, including the first 6 Bulldog baskets of the game. Butler led 15-3 5 minutes in, and pushed the lead out to 33-16 with 7 minutes to go. The Dawgs then seemed to get complacent, and weren't nearly as aggressive at either end of the floor for the rest of the half. Still, they went into the locker room with a 48-34 lead. They came out much sharper in the second half, and never let the visitors get closer than 16 points. They led by as much as 32 at one point before clearing the bench.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Miller. Brandon quickly calmed any fears anyone might have had about his recovery from off-season shoulder surgery. Brandon was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field in the first half, all seven shots being 3-pointers. He scored 12 of Butler's first 15 points. The sharp-shooter from New Castle finished 8-of-8 from 3-point range for the game, missing his only attempt from inside the arc. He led all scorers with 26 points and dished out a game high 5 assists.

Super sub Darnell Archey once again provided a spark off the bench, finishing with 14 points and a typical 4-for-6 night from downtown. Rylan Hainje added 13 points and a game high 6 rebounds. Thomas Jackson never quite got into the flow, but still had 8 points and 3 assists. Scott Robisch, looking much stronger than he did at the end of last season, added 8 points and 5 rebounds. GT Express was led by James Head's 13 points.

It's hard to get a read on a team from an exhibition game, so I won't bother over-analyzing what I saw tonight. But it's safe to say the offense looked like it was firing on all cylinders. They really moved the ball around well and worked for the open shot. Quite often, that shot happened to be an open 3-pointer, and 50% of those looks found the bottom of the net. Our rebounding looked better, especially on the offensive glass. We were very aggressive in hitting the boards on offense and got quite a few second chance points. The defense was rather lax towards the end of the first half (as evidenced by GT Express' 54% shooting), but the Dawgs did a much better job on defense in the second half (as evidenced by GT Express' 33% shooting.) All in all, a nice way to start things off.

Butler has a closed scrimmage next Saturday against Miami University to wrap up its preseason schedule. The Bulldogs will then head up to Fairbanks, Alaska, for the Top of the World Classic. Their opening round opponent will be Radford from the Big South Conference. Game time is Friday night, November 16, at 11 pm EST.

Todd in Indy:
Overall, a decent showing. When Butler is playing really well, they
almost never allow an easy basket. There were several easy baskets
towards the end of the first half last night. They did a nice job of
tightening the defense in the second half. They also need to score from the
inside far more than they did last night.

Brandon Miller was exceptional. Not only was he sinking shots right
and left but he was also getting wide open for them. I thought that
Hainje played a nice game and was pretty tough on the boards. He may want
to take the three point shot a bit less frequently though. The same
goes for Thomas Jackson. He's a decent long range shooter but hoised a
few pretty early in the shot clock. Joel Cornette has to rebound more.
Scott Robisch needs to find the arch on his jump shot. Lewis Curry
looks bigger this year, more bulked up. Mike Monserez looked lost most of
the night. Rob Walls got things rolling a bit in the second half.
Archey was great. Despite all of the threes, my favorite play was his
pull up shot over a taller defender late in the game. I like him better
at point than Miller.
