The second half was all Bulldogs. Joel Cornette set the tone early when the first play was drawn up as an alley-oop, which senior Thomas Jackson delivered perfectly and JC rammed home. The Flames never got closer than their halftime deficit of 12, although they did close to within a dozen at 73-61 with 2:03 to go. But the Bulldogs ended the game on a 12-0 run, and the three seniors were taken out to a thunderous roar from the crowd.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME: The seniors. Hainje had a game-high 21 points along with three rebounds and two steals. Robisch had 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a pair of 3-pointers. Jackson finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals. A solid all-around effort by all three seniors.
Brandon Miller joined the senior trio in double-digits with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting (4-of-5 from 3-point range). Cornette added seven points and a game-high eight rebounds along with a pair of blocks. Mike Moore had a very strong effort off the bench with five points and seven rebounds. Mike Monserez added four points and three rebounds. Darnell Archey and Lewis Curry finished with three points apiece. UIC was led by Cedrick Banks' 19 points and five rebounds.
The first matchup with UIC saw 50 fouls called; this one had 53. Although Butler struggled from the free throw line (26-of-41 for 63%), they did really well at just about every other statistic. They outshot and outrebounded the Flames, forced more turnovers, and had more steals and assists. Particularly impressive was Butler's perimeter defense: UIC was shooting 42% from behind the arc coming in, but managed just 20% (3-for-15) today.
With the #1 seed wrapped up, Butler will play the winner of the Horizon League tournament 8-9 play-in game. #8 Wisconsin-Green Bay will face #9 Youngstown State on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. EST in Cleveland. The winner of that game will face the Bulldogs at around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday the 2nd.
This Senior Day couldn't have been scripted any better, a beautiful afternoon with the sunshine streaming in historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, a great team effort by the Bulldogs, showing a national TV audience what The Butler Way is all about. We walked in the gym smiling and left the same way, a fantastic crowd, a super result and a terrific sendoff for a class of guys that have contributed an awful lot to BU hoops. I'm sure that the seniors will the first to tell you that they have also received a lotin return from their association with Butler, but I have really enjoyed watching them and I'm sorry that they have played their last game in Hinkle. And speaking of the last game, I'm shocked that we aren't still sitting in the stands, at one point I felt that the game wouldn't be over until midnight. I guess one of the curses of a national TV audience was the desire of the zebras to get some face time and did they ever. First they nearly let things get out of hand (given the first BU-UIC game this year that is inexcusable) and then "atone" for that blunder by clamping down so tight that any semblance of a basketball game was soon lost. The extracurricular shenanigans and physical abuse that TJ took was a real shame. Normally I would be heartened by the fact that the Big Cheese from the league was in attendance so that that kind of outrageous officiating would be halted, but I'm not holding out much hope in this case. I fear that we are saddled with this level of officiating for the forseeable future, we just have to suck it up and play through the crap. I only hope that someone doesn't get hurt in the process. Couldn't be more proud of our team, what a tremendous accomplishment to go 25-4 and trump last season's win total. All the players and coaches are to be congratulated on a terrific effort. Although there has been some occasional grousing by fans on the message board, in general I have been so impressed by our supporters at every game (home and away) that I have attended this year. I hope that we can continue to take the high road in any and all discourse we have with the fans of our opponents and remember that perceived slights are no excuse to respond in kind. It's a great thing to be a Bulldog fan, and I count myself lucky to be associated in even a small way with a great institution like BU. I always enjoy bringing guests to Hinkle and letting them in on one of the best kept secrets in the basketball world. Although we got a brief taste of the limelight with our Top 25 flirtation, I don't mind the lower profile we currently enjoy. We'll get any respect we truly deserve the old fashioned way, on the court. I think we'll soon find out if we are one of the top teams in the country by our performance between the lines, and I for one am looking forward to the chance to prove our mettle. Thanks to the fans for all the support and the coaches and players for their hard work, it's been a treat. Let's back up this regular season with a solid effort in Cleveland and extend our season a bit longer, I think the best is yet to come. Go Dogs !!!
