PLAYER OF THE GAME: Darnell Archey. Something about playing the Bisons brings out the best in Arch. A year ago, he dropped a career-high 22 points on Lipscomb at Hinkle. He had another career best tonight, finishing with a game-high 26 points. He was 5-of-8 from 3-point range, but almost more notable was his performance inside the arc. He was 4-of-6 on 2-point attempts, further proving how hard he's worked to take jump shots off of dribble penetration. Everyone knows he can shoot from deep--he's not going to surprise anyone like he did as a freshman. But he's using that to his advantage this season by drawing the defense out, shot-faking, and taking a couple dribbles closer for an open jumper.
The New Castle Connection was firing on all cylinders. Archey's fellow NC grad Brandon Miller added 19 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Rylan Hainje had another strong outing with 13 points, a game-high 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. Jackson didn't have gaudy point totals, but he did a fine job of running the offense. He had 4 points and 3 steals, and an impressive 5 assists against no turnovers in 32 minutes. Scott Robisch added 6 points and 4 boards. Joel Cornette didn't score but pulled down 6 rebounds. Mike Monserez hit a pair of threes off the bench for 6, and Mike Moore had 2 points late in the game. Lipscomb was led by Jason Jackson with 11 points and 7 rebounds.
A couple of notable achievements beyond those already mentioned: Hainje joined 24 other Bulldogs in the 1,000-point club with his performance tonight. He now has 1,003 points at Butler, becoming the first Bulldog player to reach that plateau since Jon Neuhouser did it as a junior in 1996-7. J.P. Brens is #24 with 1,023 points. Jackson currently sits at 988 career points, so he has a good chance of joining the club Saturday against Evansville. He also sits at #3 all-time at Butler with 423 career assists, closing in on his predecessor Jeff Rogers' total of 457. Tim Bowen's total of 471 assists will most certainly be eclipsed. Butler also shot a team-record 32 shots from 3-point range tonight, eclipsing the previous high of 30 set against Detroit in 1993.
Butler returns home to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a pair of Saturday games. First up is in-state rival Evansville, who defeated the Bulldogs last season at Roberts Stadium, 74-73. That was Butler's first loss last season and the start of a 3-game skid, so the Dawgs probably will have a little revenge on their minds. Game time is Saturday, December 8, at 2 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
One of the players told me he never felt so unsatisfied after a 20 point road win, not that you usually get a lot of 20 point road wins. Apparently the team did not feel it played particularly well. If Lipscomb had either more size or more talent we could have been in trouble. I expect E-ville to bring out a better game in us.
