DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

A pair of eight-game streaks came to an end as Loyola defeated Butler 60-56 at the Gentile Center. Butler's eight-game winning streak ended, and Loyola snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Bulldogs. Loyola showed from the opening tip that tonight's game would be nothing like Butler's 30-point blowout win at Hinkle last month. The Ramblers jumped out to a 10-1 lead, and their defense forced Butler to take a pair of 30-second timeouts to avoid turnovers. The Bulldogs bounced back with a 10-0 run of their own to take an 11-10 lead. That would be the only advantage Butler would enjoy all evening, as Loyola ran off nine straight points to push their lead back out to eight at 19-11. The Ramblers took a 28-21 lead into the locker room at halftime, and murdered Butler on the boards, 21-11. The second half started much like the first: Loyola reeled off seven straight points to take their biggest lead of the night at 35-21 and forced another Butler timeout with their defensive pressure. Butler pulled to within six at 40-34 before yet another 7-0 Loyola run pushed the Rambler advantage back to 13. The Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run to get within three points at 49-46. It was 51-46 when Butler head coach Todd Lickliter was whistled for a technical foul. Loyola's David Bailey hit 1-of-2 technical free throws, and hit a back-breaking 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the game away. The Bulldogs pulled to within three late at 59-56, but Bailey hit 1-of-2 free throws to end the game.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Monserez. In a game where Butler desperately needed a spark, MM did everything he could off the bench to keep the Bulldogs in the game. He was 4-of-6 from three-point range and hit a pair of free throws to lead the team with 14 points. He also had three rebounds. Unfortunately for Butler fans, it wasn't enough.

Brandon Miller was Butler's only other double-digit scorer with 10 points, marking the first time all season that Brandon finished with 10 or more points and Butler failed to win. Darnell Archey hit three three-point baskets for nine points. Joel Cornette added nine points and seven rebounds, and Rylan Hainje finished with six points and seven rebounds. Thomas Jackson struggled from the field, shooting just 1-of-6 and scoring four points, but added six assists, three rebounds, and two steals. Scott Robsich had four points and four rebounds. Loyola was led by Bailey's game-high 20 points.

The two Butler/Loyola games this season were markedly different. In the first meeting, the matchup between Jackson and Bailey was decidedly in Jackson's favor; tonight, it was Bailey's turn to shine. DB was 8-of-13 from the field and did a great job defensively on Thomas. Loyola's Ryan Blankson, the Horizon League's leading rebounder, was held to just five points and two rebounds at Hinkle last month; tonight, he finished with eight points and 14 rebounds. Loyola was outrebounded 39-30 in Indy; tonight, the Ramblers beat the Bulldogs on the boards 38-31. Butler's starters combined for 67 last month; tonight, the team managed just 56 points, and the starters just 33.

The loss more than likely dashes any chance Butler had at an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs were teetering on the bubble, but with an RPI in the 60's, their margin for error was fairly slim. All is not lost, however, as the Bulldogs can still reach 25 wins in the regular season with a win against UIC.

Butler returns home for the final time in the regular season for what is sure to be an emotional Senior Day. Thomas Jackson, Rylan Hainje, and Scott Robisch will lace 'em up one final time against the UIC Flames. Game time is Saturday, February 23, at 4:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. Hope to see you there.

User comments

Old 'dawg from Chicago, IL:
I went to the game Wednesday. It has taken me two days to overcome the
shock of the game to make my comments. Butler had no energy. Rylan Hanje is a
head case. He ran his mouth all night instead of playing ball. I can't
believe he is a senior. He acts like a freshman JC player or worse a
playground player. When he made a foul it was the referee fault. When he made
an error he pouted. What's up with this. Butler lacked any enthusiasm.
Thomas Jackson was flat. But I guess the thing that upset me the most was
Coach Linklitter's coaching or lack of coaching. Granted LU was successful
with their trap, but BU did nothing to counter. BU's big men stood on the
blocks and the guards ran around the perimeter. There was no movement! I hope
BU comes up with a solution, because we are going to make the tournament, but
will be out in the first round if anyone has scouted us. Overall, the game was
sad. I still can't believe the lack of energy. You'd think that the seniors
would be excited and enthusized to win and make a great effort the last few
games of their last year... Unfortunately, I have to watch the game on ESPN on
Saturday. Pray that Todd can do some coaching and Rylan becomes a man
overnight.
