DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held off a determined Mount St. Mary's team, defeating the Mount 66-46. I was in West Lafayette watching Purdue and Illinois-Chicago, so I was unable to listen to the game. But there were a few Butler fans in attendance, so I will let them tell the story. First up, a recap from my good friend, "nycdawg":
It wasn't pretty, but the Bulldogs extended their undefeated record to
10-0 with a 66-46 victory over Mount Saint Mary's (1-6) of the Northeast
Conference. Most of the night there seemed to be a lid on both baskets, and
the only cures were lay-ups and Darnell Archey jump shots. Butler took an 8-0
lead, and the Mountaineers did not score until the 14:42 mark of the first
half. Butler extended the lead to 26-6 before Mount Saint Mary's went on a
18-2 run to end the half. This cut the lead to 28-22 and had the underdog
Mountaineers believing they could upset the undefeated Bulldogs. The
Mountaineer fans, all 450 of them, actually started to make some noise.

Both teams continued their cold shooting from the perimeter, but Butler was
able to score on lay-ups with some nice ball movement. Brandon Miller was an
instant fan favorite in Knott Arena when he became tangled up with Jason Epps.
Epps was whistled for a technical foul for shoving Miller to the ground.
Archey sank the two free throws, and hit a three on the ensuing possession to
put this game out of reach.

Thomas Jackson led the Bulldogs with 16 points with 7 coming in the last five
minutes of the game. Archey and Mike Monserez came off the bench to add 13 a
piece. Scott Robisch led the Bulldogs with 8 rebounds, and Rylan Hainje had 7
boards.

PLAYER OF THE GAME - Darnell Archey. He seemed to be the only person to hit a
jump shot, and they came at needed intervals. With 12:40 remaining in the
first half, the bulldogs finally scored from outside the lane when Arch hit a
three.
Next, Butler grad Doug Montanaro from Bethesda, MD, checks in:
I WENT TO THE GAME WITH MT. ST. MARY'S BEING ABOUT AN HOUR
AWAY FROM WASH D.C. THERE WAS A HANDFUL OF OTHER BUTLER GRADS WITH ONE OF
THEM COMING DOWN FROM NEW JERSEY. BUTLER CAME OUT STRONG WITH SOME EARLY
STEALS FOR EASY LAY UPS BY JACKSON AND SOME EARLY SHARP SHOOTING BY
ARCHEY. THEN IT SEEMS THEY LOST THEIR FOCUS AND INTEREST PERHAPS SUFFERING
A LITTLE LET DOWN AFTER THE NO. IOWA WIN AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THE BALL
STATE GAME. THEY CAME OUT STRONG AGAIN IN THE SECOND HALF AND SORT OF
TOYED WITH MT ST MARY'S. ALL IN ALL THEY WERE PRETTY SLOPPY WITH THEIR
PASSING AND HAD SEVERAL SHOTS COME BACK OUT AFTER APPEARING TO BE GOOD. I
WOULD SAY THE GUARD PLAY WAS SOLID WITH CO-MVP HONORS GOING TO JACKSON
AND ARCHEY BUT THE FRONT COURT PLAY WAS WEAK WITH CORNETTE THROWING
SEVERAL ERRANT PASSES. AGAIN IT WAS A GOOD GAME TO GET BEHIND US AS WE NOW
TURN OUR FOCUS TO BALL STATE.
Thanks to both of you for your input!

It was good to get this game out of the way and come away with a win. It was also good to see the Bulldogs outrebound the Mount 39-31. Now we can put this one behind us and focus on the big game in Muncie.

Butler travels to Muncie on Wednesday to face the Ball State Cardinals. BSU is ranked #23 in the coaches' poll and #21 in the AP poll, so if Butler is to make some noise nationally and crack the top 25, there's no better place or time than at Ball State on Wednesday. Game time is Wednesday, December 19, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there. If you can't make the trip, the game is supposed to be televised in Indy on PAX-TV channel 63. Check your local listings.

I have to admit that I turned my attention to something else at 26-6,
and when I flipped it back I was shocked. Normally we don't fritter
away a solid lead, but thankfully the Mad Bombers (Archey and Monserez)
hit some big shots to help out. Yes, it was Brandon Miller, the
pugnacious one, who was involved in the altercation. At a game this year,
someone asked me who he reminded me of and I said Jake LaMotta, to which he
replied, yes, "The Raging Bulldog". His nose has the look of a person
who is unafraid of physical contact.

Glad to get Mt. St. Marys over and done with, just wish we could have
had more minutes for some of the reserve players. On to Ball State.

The ONLY reason that msm had 30% shooting
was that they absolutely SUCK! They had more wide open shots than (edited for
content). Our defense was a step lackluster. Coach was trying to rest the
starters but the reserves dropped the defensive intensity and he was
forced to play more minutes from them. Dude, we would have been beat if
this team had anyone. Most of those guys looked (sounded) bad enough
to only be starters on a jv team. And what is up with TJ and turnovers?
Anyway, at least we got the win and that is what is important. Oh yeah,
player of the game.....Coach Lick. I'm out
