DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs gave first year head coach Todd Lickliter a victory in his debut on the Butler sidelines with a 73-56 win over Radford in the opening round of the Top of the World Classic. The Highlanders led for a good portion of the first half, including a 6-point advantage at 19-13. But the Bulldogs scratched and clawed their way to a 36-35 halftime lead. Butler tightened up their defense in the second half, forcing 12 turnovers and allowing Radford only 12 attempts from the field. The Dawgs, clinging to a 50-48 lead, went on an 11-0 run midway through the second half to put the game away.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Rylan Hainje. The burly senior forward helped Butler distance itself from Radford with 11 second-half points, including 7 straight during the 11-point run. He finished with a game high 17 points, and was the only Bulldog to get to the free throw line, where he hit all three attempts.

Hainje led 5 Bulldogs in double figures. Suber sub Darnell Archey did what he does best--provide a spark off the bench. He finished with 11 points and three 3-pointers. A trio of Bulldogs finished with 10 points: Scott Robisch, Brandon Miller, and Thomas Jackson. Notre Dame transfer Mike Monserez hit a pair of 3-pointers early to finish with 6 points in his Butler debut, and Joel Cornette added 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Lewis Curry buried a late trey for 3 points. The Highlanders were led by Raymond "Peanut" Arrington's 15 points and Andrey Savtchenko's 14.

Butler got off to a slow start, but that's more a credit to Radford's team than anything the Bulldogs were doing poorly. The defense Butler played in the second half made the difference. It's hard to win when you only attempt 12 shots in a half. The Bulldogs held their own in rebounds against a formidable Radford front line, winning the battle of the boards 26-24. And once again the 3-ball was kind to the Dawgs, with Butler nailing 12-of-24 treys. Butler forced Radford into 20 turnovers, and only committed 7 of their own. All in all, a nice way to start the season, and great win for Coach Lick in his debut.

Butler awaits the winner of the nightcap between Delaware and Wichita State. The Bulldogs will tip off sometime after midnight Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Butler95:
I didn't see or hear any of this one, but looking at the
box score I'm concerned about only shooting 3 free throws. Granted,
Radford only committed 10 fouls. Were the Dawgs not overly agressive
underneath, or was it because the 3 was falling so well?
My response: I'd say a little of both. Radford's front line is no pushover, so inside shots weren't easy to come by. But like you said, our 3-point shooting certainly reduced our need to look underneath. I would guess that a 3 free throw night would be the exception rather than the rule this season, and we'll see Thomas Jackson at the line a lot.
