The Battle of the Bulldogs was certainly a dog-fight as Butler trudged its way to a 45-37 victory over Samford in the opening round of the Hoosier Classic. Both teams play at a deliberate pace on offense, and when the shots aren't falling (which was certainly the case tonight), it can be ugly. Butler jumped out to an early 10-3 lead and pushed it out to 20-10. Samford managed to shave three points from that deficit and went into the locker room trailing 26-19. Samford got as close as five at 34-29 before SU head coach Jimmy Tillette received a technical foul after voicing his displeasure over a Joel Cornette blocked shot that he felt should have been a goal-tend. Darnell Archey hit both technical free throws, and a pair of quick Butler field goals pushed the lead back out to 11 points at 40-29. It hovered between seven and nine for most of the second half before SU's Phillip Ramelli hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to six. Butler hit some key free throws down the stretch to preserve the win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Rylan Hainje. The senior forward came up big once again, leading all scorers with 20 points. He was the only Butler player to consistently look for points inside, and got to the free throw line 10 times, converting on seven. He had five rebounds and four steals, including back-to-back thefts which resulted in a dunk and a lay-up in the first half.
After Hainje, the offensive numbers don't look too good for Butler. Scott Robisch, Thomas Jackson, and Archey each finished with six points. Brandon Miller added five points and three assists, and Cornette finished with two points, seven rebounds, and a pair of blocked shots. Samford was led by Corey Green's 11 points.
Samford destroyed Butler on the boards, 34-21. Most often it was one-and-done for Butler, as evidenced by just four BU offensive rebounds. Perimeter shooting for Butler was a struggle, but once again their defense overcame a rough night on offense. Butler forced 19 turnovers while committing just seven. And while they did get burned on the occasionaly back-door cut, they did a find job of taking away Samford's perimeter attack. SU was averaging 26 three-point attempts entering this game, and only shot 14, making just three. Hats off to Samford though: anyone who thought Butler would romp in this game was sorely mistaken, and a great deal of credit goes to their Bulldog counterparts from Birmingham for making us fight for 40 minutes for the win.
Butler's win, coupled with Indiana's victory over Eastern Washington, paves the way for the unofficial "State Championship" game everyone's been looking forward to. After Eastern Washington and Samford play in the consolation game tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. EST, Butler and IU will play for state bragging rights in the championship game. Game time will be Saturday, December 29, at approximately 8:15 p.m. EST (30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game). Due to a longstanding prior commitment, I will be unable to attend the game (and you don't know how much it pains me to say that!) So be sure to root the Dawgs on to victory in my absence, and help me write the game story tomorrow night.
I've seen detergents leave better film than this!WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
This is a tough one to figure, and I am not helped by the giant beers that went down at the Rathskeller both before and after the game. I thought it would be a slowdown game, and Samford was as patient as expected. I did get a kick out of watching another team run a weave up top, but we defended it well for the most part, limiting their 3 point shot attempts and makes. They didn't kill us with the back door cuts, although anyone who runs that offense will get a few, and they did. Overall we had enough discipline on defense to negate what they wanted to do, which is why I felt we would win the game from the outset. I really don't think we looked past Samford, but they are a tough team that will use their style and discipline to beat most of the teams in the their conference. It's too bad for them that their coach was just a bit too undisciplined at the wrong time. Cornette's block may have indeed been a goaltend, but the technical on the Samford bench hurt them a lot more than losing the two points for the bucket. That was actually a crucial part of the game, and in a contest where points were at a premium, he cost his squad more than they could afford to lose. Offensively, we struggled mightily, and even though Hainje put us on his back again, our lack of work on the boards was troubling. Normally, when we don't shoot the ball well outside, you'll see the guards try to penetrate and and also hit the glass a bit more, but that was not the case last night. Samford did defend us well, but instead of constantly looking for the 3 ball off the weave, we needed to use the dribble drive and dish or pull up. We have the ability to do this, but we tried to shoot our way out of a slump instead of taking the ball inside. Hopefully IU will not play the same disciplined style as Samford, and with Newton, Leach and Jefferies inside, we will either have to get some fouls on them early or get hot from outside and stay that way. Last night was a grinder, I've seen plenty of them over the years at Hinkle, a couple of games against Loyola and UMW come to mind where it was a high school score and nobody could buy a bucket but we gutted it out. This Bulldog team is tough and has a lot of pride, and win or lose, I expect them to put forth their best effort against IU. I have always been proud of these Butler teams in the last decade because of the character that they showed and how hard they played, and I'm sure that the game against IU will be no different. There will be a sea of red in Conseco tonight, but lets hope that there is enough blue to get us through. Go Dogs.
