DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Detroit showed why it has the nation's second longest home winning streak as they defeated Butler, 63-54. The Titans played stifling defense all night long, holding Butler to just 31% shooting for the game and 27% from 3-point range. Detroit led by three at halftime, 26-23, thanks in large part to a 10 point effort from Terrell Riggs. They pushed their lead out to 10 in the second half, but Butler was able to make a run and tie things up. But the Bulldogs never really got on track offensively, and the Titans quickly pushed their lead back out to 10. A 3-point basket by Greg Grays late in the half sealed it, and gave Detroit its 36th straight home win and its 59th victory in its last 60 games at Calihan Hall.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Thomas Jackson. TJ had nine second-half points en route to 13 for the game, and added six steals and four rebounds. He had just one assist, leaving him six behind Tim Bowen on Butler's all-time list.

Rylan Hainje added 17 points for the Bulldogs. Brandon Miller continues to struggle from the floor, shooting just 2-of-8, but finished with seven points, three rebounds, and three assists. Darnell Archey hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points off the bench. Scott Robisch added five points and six rebounds, and Joel Cornette had four points and six rebounds prior to fouling out. Rob Walls had a basket for two points, and provided a bit of a spark off the bench with his defensive intensity and hustle. Detroit was led by Grays with 17 points and eight rebounds, and Riggs finished with a double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds.

After the Cleveland State game, it looked like our offense was back on track. We were patient, moved the ball well, and knocked down open looks. But tonight it was basically a two-man show with Jackson and Hainje, and that is exactly opposite of the team approach that got the Bulldogs off to a 13-0 start. We only had six assists tonight, which speaks volumes about how much Detroit disrupted our offense and forced us into a lot of one-on-one situations. They killed us on the boards, 43-26, which is disheartening after such a solid rebounding performance at Cleveland State. And our free throw shooting was abysmal in the second half, especially at key moments when we needed to chip away at Detroit's lead. We were just 9-for-18 from the free throw line in the second half. Detroit outplayed Butler in just about every aspect of the game tonight, and deserved the victory.

The Bulldogs meet the Horizon League's newest member when they travel to Youngstown State to face the Penguins. Game time is Saturday, January 12, at 7:00 p.m. EST.

WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
I had this game penciled in as the toughest Sunset League tilt of the
year, and Detroit plays so tough up there I wasn't counting on a win,
but I never thought that we would lose the game on effort stats. I don't
suit up and I'm not a coach, so it's hard for me to judge how hard
somebody plays, but in a game against the Titans, you KNOW they are going
to jack up a lot of ugly shots and that you MUST hit the glass. Well,
we got outrebounded by a bushel or two and that was the ball game.

I read some IU posts after we beat them and they complained that "all
Butler can do is shoot the three" and on a night when we couldn't find
the range from beyond the arc, we also couldn't knock down the free
throws that our dribble drives earned for us. In Calihan Hall, that spells
defeat.

I listened to the post game where the coach said that he has never
mentioned the ranking issue to the team, instead keeping them focused on
individual game preparation. After last nights lack of baord production
and terrible offensive work (when was the last time we had single digit
assists?) I guess that is an issue he won't have to address. We will
get bounced from the Top 25 because right now, we don't belong there. I
have always been so proud of our teams because win or lose, they push
it to the max, but I can't recall anyone getting on the hardwood last
night. We need to get back to the scarappy, underdog mentality that has
served us so well in the past. And we will.

It doesn't faze me that we will be unranked next week, our performance
is what put us there and what dropped us out. However, I have not even
begun to lose faith in this team. We have an outstanding group of
players that can do some damage in March, and for so many reasons, I think
this will be our best year ever. Let's put the hardhat back on and
take care of business in Youngstown and welcome these Dogs home next
Thursday, at 15-2, with a big crowd in The Barn. Adversity defines
character.

Go Dogs.

First of all this loss is really going to give us a perspective on how
good of a coach Lickliter is.

Could we have looked any more flat last night? We didn't even look like
we wanted to play. Did anyone watch the Duke and GT game last night?
That's the way a team comes out of the gates and destroys a team they
should beat. Someone got Duke fired up for the game.......Lickliter
didn't do that for us. Detroit is horrible!! We should have beat them by
15 easy!

I'm not blaming the whole loss on coach, but he needs to do something
to get them ready to play night in and night out.....that didn't happen
last night.

Lets turn this around!
