DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Butler overcame a 10-point second half deficit to defeat the UIC Flames, 82-73. It was a brutal game that saw both teams combine for 50 fouls, 3 technical fouls, and 76 free throw attempts. The Flames took a two point lead into the locker room at halftime, with Butler's Brandon Miller hitting a late 3-pointer to pull the Bulldogs within a deuce. UIC jumped out to a 53-43 advantage in the second half and seemed to be in control, but Butler went on a 21-4 run to lead 64-57. UIC would tie it back up at 64, but the Bulldogs outscored them 18-9 to close out the game and earn the victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. With Thomas Jackson in foul trouble most of the game and eventually fouling out after just 17 minutes, Miller was thrust into the point guard role and responded with a career-high 29 points. He was 5-of-7 from 3-point range and a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line, and also added five assists and five rebounds. He provided great "senior leadership" according to the FoxSports Chicago broadcast team, who never looked at a roster long enough to learn he's actually a junior.

Two other Bulldogs joined Miller in double figures. Rylan Hainje had 20 points, eight rebounds, and a pair of steals. Mike Monserez hit two 3-pointers in each half for 12 points off the bench to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Jackson had a tough night, getting two fouls early in the first half, then responded to his third foul early in the second half in a manner that earned him a technical foul, which sent him to the bench with four fouls. Coach Lickliter wouldn't keep him there long, and TJ played a few solid minutes before picking up his fifth foul. He finished with eight points and three assists. Scott Robisch added eight points and four rebounds. Joel Cornette had a horrible night at the free throw line, going 0-for-7, but did manage two points, four assists, three rebounds, and a pair of key steals late in the game. Rob Walls nailed a trey for his only shot attempt of the evening, finishing with three points. UIC was led by Martell Bailey, brother of Loyola star David Bailey, with 21 points and seven assists.

To be honest, I thought we were sunk after TJ picked up #4, and especially after he fouled out. But Miller stepped up big and really made the difference for the Bulldogs. It was a team effort, to be sure, but Brandon's leadership was key. They fought back from 10 points down, and although the defense wasn't quite what it could have been, they made stops at key points in the game, and won the battle of the boards, 36-19. A nice win, and a good start for the road swing.

The middle game of the road trip send the Bulldogs to Milwaukee for a rematch against the UWM Panthers. The game occurs just 11 days after Clay Tucker's buzzer-beating 3-pointer beat the Bulldogs at Hinkle. Hopefully the Dawgs will return the favor on the Panthers' home floor. Game time is Wednesday, January 30, at 8 p.m. EST.

WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
I listened to the game on the radio, and later watched the tape, and
after listening and watching to the different crews that called the
action it was as if they were two diffeent games. I expect CD and Ralph to
be on our side, but Kaplan and Van Lier turned a blind eye to UIC's
physical play, instead choosing to focus on our retaliation. Admittedly,
we looked like the Pacers out there whining to the refs, and there is
NO place for complaints to the zebras, but we have been geting knocked
around for the last seven games with few whistles. It is essential that
we keep our cool in the face of this style of play and lack of calls,
but I would hope that at some point the refs take control of these
Sunste League contests early and avoid the confrontations.

Still, it wqs a gutty road performance which featured an outstanding
comeback and great play from Miller. Hainje was a man inside, his
rebound on the missed free throw late was unreal. Also a nice bit of
coaching to back into the zone since we couldn't stop the dribble penetration.
I'm sorry, but I just don't care for the play of the brothers Bailey.
It's true they are quick enough to get by their man, but then they just
lurch into the lane and heave up some ugliness hoping for a kind roll
and a whistle. I have never been fond of that style of play, but you
have to defend it all, and we found a way eventually.

It has become obvious that Sunset teams are going to try and push us
around. We need to respond with discipline, effort and silence. I
really hope that we let our effort on the floor do the talking for the team,
and if anything needs to be said to the zebras, the coaching staff will
get it done. I had this one marked as a toughie and it was, but we
showed some of the grit that I knew we had, and if we bring the defense
and composure Wednesday night we can avenge ourselves against Pearl and
the Panthers.

Go Dogs!!!
