PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Hainje and Thomas Jackson both share honors in my opinion, although it was a team effort that won the game. Rylan had 13 second half points, hit a crucial 3-pointer during the comeback, and sank all six free throws he attempted in the half. He finished with 16 points and dished out 5 assists. TJ led all scorers with 19 points, hit a pair of second half treys, had 5 steals and 5 rebounds, and earned all-tournament team honors for his efforts.
Every Bulldog contributed to this victory in some way. Joel Cornette had 9 points and 5 boards prior to fouling out. Brandon Miller finished with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and a pair of crucial 3-pointers. Archey added three 3-pointers off the bench for 9 points. Mike Moore had 2 points and played some key minutes while the starting front line was in foul trouble. Rob Walls, Lewis Curry, and Mike Monserez each finished with no points, but played good defense and hauled in key rebounds. Scott Robisch struggled from the field after a career high 24 points the night before with no points in this game, but still earned an all-tournament team spot for his efforts over the 3 games. Washington was led by David Dixon with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
This year's team may truly be special. Prior Butler squads would have folded after getting off to such a horrendous start, but this team perservered and did all the things it needed to do to pull off the comeback. Not only coming back from huge double digit deficits, but fighting back when 4 and 6 point margins got pushed back up to 8 or 10. This team has a lot of heart, and should never be counted out of any game. They played solid defense in the second half after the Huskies shot the lights out in the first half, they struggled from downtown (9-of-29) but hit when it counted (4 of their last 5 attempts from beyond the arc), they hit their free throws (14-for-16) after struggling the night before, and did all the little things that good teams do to win. With so many things going wrong for Butler in this game, Bulldog fans everywhere should feel good that the Dawgs still managed to find a way to win. That should be a common theme throughout this season.
Butler will fly back to Indianapolis immediately following the game, returning to Butler around 7 p.m. Monday night. Coach Lickliter's talk show will be Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Union Jack's in Broad Ripple. And then the game Butler fans have been waiting for, the home opener, is Sunday, November 25, at 3 p.m. versus state rival Indiana State. Butler lost a hard-fought game in overtime at Terre Haute last season, and will be looking for paybacks in front of the Hinkle faithful. Hope to see you there.
It is great to see tiny Butler beat a Pac 10 school. I am afraid we will not be able to sneak up on anyone as we are starting to earn a reputation as an ex-cellent B-Ball school. I will be attending the Mt. Saint Mary's game Dec 17. Does Butler have any more east coast games scheduled in the near future? I see where Detroit is playing Maryland at Cole Fieldhouse this year. Why don't we try to do the same? thanks Doug PS-my roomate at Butler was Doug Wininger who starred for Butler in the mid to late 60's.
My response: The Mount St. Mary's game is the only east coast appearance currently scheduled. But if we are fortunate enough to make the NCAA's again, I believe one of the first round sites is in Washington, D.C., so perhaps you'll get another chance to see the Bulldogs. As for why we don't play Maryland, I would say that Butler could travel to any number of top schools for a game, but would prefer to get some kind of home-and-home series out of the deal. We play many quality opponents on the road this season, but the big guys won't come to Hinkle. And the more we win, the harder it gets.

I live in the Chicago area. Love Butler basketball. It took me 2 days to find a way to listen to the game live on the internet. I was excited. But the real excitement came when the Dawgs came back. This is going to be a great season. I predict 28 wins!
