DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Butler overcame a sluggish start with a determined defensive effort to defeat Wisconsin-Green Bay, 64-41. Things went well for the visiting Phoenix early, as it built an 18-9 lead at the 11:00 mark. Butler went on an 11-0 run to take a 20-18 lead, and led 26-22 at halftime. The Bulldogs had just one assist on eight first-half baskets, but it was a momentous one--Thomas Jackson fed Brandon Miller for a 3-pointer, and with that pass became Butler's all-time leader in assists with 472, eclipsing Tim Bowen's mark of 471. The Bulldogs made a 10-0 run to start the second half, and never looked back, winning 64-41. After trailing 18-9 in the first half, Butler outscored the Phoenix 55-23.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. Brandon led all scorers with 16 points and seemed to break out of the funk he's been in offensively. The fire was back in his eyes, and he buried a pair of 3-pointers during the opening run of the second half that helped put the game away. He also had a pair of steals.

Mike Monserez had another solid effort off the bench. He finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Jackson added 12 points, two assists, and three steals. Joel Cornette struggled to a 4-of-11 night at the free throw line, but still finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Rylan Hainje took only two shots and had just five points, but pulled down a game-high seven rebounds. Darnell Archey added five points off the bench, and Rob Walls nailed a 3-pointer, grabbed a couple boards, and played tremendous defense once again. Calix N'diaye led the Phoenix with 14 points, 12 of them coming in the first half.

Coach Lickliter noted afterward that at the start of the game we seemed anxious for whatever reason, which led to several difficult or rushed shots. He also credited UWGB's defense for further compounding things. But once the Bulldogs settled down, especially in the second half, things went much better. The key, as always, was defense. The Bulldogs really stifled the Phoenix' offense from about midway through the first half on. Lickliter emphasized that games aren't necessarily won or lost in the first half, and that it often takes a while to take command of a game, so he wasn't worried when we led by "only" four points at halftime. He has a great deal of confidence in his players, which is why he doesn't panic if the team gets out to a slow start like they did tonight. If they make adjustments and stay committed on defense, more often than not it leads to victory.

The Bulldogs continue their three-game homestand with a game against another Wisconsin school, the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers. UWM is 4-1 in Horizon League play, and will prove to be a defensive challenge for Butler. Game time is Saturday, January 19, at 2 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on FoxSports North, and replayed on tape at 6 p.m. EST on FoxSports Midwest. If you're traveling to the game, you may want to arrive early as there is an event at Clowes Hall that also begins at 2. Hope to see you at Hinkle.

WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
While it's obvious that GB is way down this year, the Dogs really
cranked up the defense to take control of the game. The crowd in my section
was reminiscing about the great games (Tony Bennett draining that three
was a heartbreaker)we have had in the past with the Phoenix, but their
talent level is dangerously low, which I am sorry to see as it
diminishes the Sunset. But that doesn't take away from a strong effort by the
Dogs, who despite a few more stuggles offensively in the first half,
brought the kind of defensive attack that will allow them to beat just
about every league opponent.

TJ continues to amaze. I think he could lose his man and penetrate damn
near every time he has the ball. And unlike many point guards of the
past, he almost never picks up his dribble. What a heady performer, and
a guy whose skill and demeanor will be sorely missed in years to come.

My lone bitch is a strong one. Why in the hell were most of the
starters in the game with the Dogs up by 25+ late in the second half??? In
fact, why didn't we subsitute all game long? You could easily insert
one or two reserves at a time without disrupting the flow, and relief is
always a quick time out away. Walls looked pretty damn good to me in
spot duty, imagine what he could do with more minutes. We have got to
get these guys in the game, and not just meaningless mop up duty at the
end.

Enough bitching, feeling great about 16-2 and the fact that a Butler
Barney was on duty to direct me in and out of the lot. I sure hope we
can get 7-8K in the barn on Saturday and raise the decibel level just a
bit. Let's get on a big roll and start punishing these league foes and
play everybody we've got. Go Dogs!!
