DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Stop me if you've heard this one: Butler leads Wisconsin-Milwaukee by 13 points in the second half, UWM chips away at the lead, and a Panther takes a last-second 3-point shot that could win the game...the similarities between this game and the heart-breaking Butler loss on January 19th were many, but fortunately for Bulldog fans, this one ended with a UWM missed shot and a Butler victory. Jason Frederick's 3-point shot missed its mark, and Butler's Joel Cornette hauled down the rebound to seal a hard-fought 59-58 victory. The game was tied at seven apiece when Butler went on an 11-2 run to go up 18-9. UWM responded with a 13-5 run to cut the Butler lead to one at 23-22, but the Bulldogs closed out the first half with a 15-4 spurt and entered the lockerroom with a 38-26 advantage. Butler was 8-of-14 from 3-point range in the opening frame, with Mike Monserez and Rylan Hainje connecting on four shots each from downtown. Butler pushed its second half lead to 13 on three separate occasions, the last coming at 52-39 with around 10 minutes remaining in the game. A 10-0 Panther run, keyed by eight points from Clay Tucker, cut the Butler lead to three. The Bulldogs made it a six point game at 57-51 on a Thomas Jackson basket, and again at 59-53 on a Cornette rebound dunk. That put-back would represent the final points for Butler, as Adrian Tigert hit a 3-pointer (just his third of the year), and Tucker followed with another basket to cut it to one with a minute remaining. Butler had a shot blocked at their end, and Tucker brought the ball up the court with a chance for the win. Tucker drove the lane and dished out to Frederick, but his trey from the wing was short, and Butler escaped with the win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Cornette. I felt bad not giving him Player of the Game honors for either of his previous two double-doubles, so I figured I'd better give him the nod on this one. JC finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and scored nine of Butler's last 13 points. Another solid effort from Joel.

Three Bulldogs joined Cornette in double-figures. Hainje had 18 points and five rebounds, and was 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Monserez finished with 12 points, all on first-half 3-pointers. Brandon Miller added 11 points and five assists. Jackson had six points and six assists. Scott Robisch and Darnell Archey, both of whom have been battling upper respiratory problems, were held scoreless in limited minutes, as was Rob Walls. Mike Moore was also scoreless, but provided eight solid minutes off the bench underneath. UWM was led by Clay Tucker, who had a game-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds.

When Tucker had the ball at the end with a chance to win, I buried my head in my hands and waited for him to hit the game-winner. Thankfully Butler's defense forced him to get rid of the ball and Frederick's trey fell short. I'm a bit concerned that we only managed seven points over the final 10 minutes, and by our season-worst 16 turnovers, but I'll certainly take the win regardless.

With game one of the three-game revenge swing under their belts, the Bulldogs now turn their focus to the Wright State Raiders, who dealt them their first loss of the season back on January 2 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in a 90-87 double-overtime thriller. Game time is Saturday, February 2, at noon EST at the Nutter Center in Dayton. The game will be televised on FoxSports Midwest and FoxSports Ohio. Hope to see you there.

WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
I too turned on my heel and shook my head when Rylan got rejected,
feeling sure that we were about to be Tuckered for the second game in a row
against UWM. Somehow, he felt a sliver of charity and dished instead
of shooting, helping us sneak out of Cheeseland with a huge W. I can't
take too many more of these nailbiters, can we please just take it to
WSU this Saturday and win by 25 so my heart can get a rest? I'm not the
best at stats, but can anybody remember a recent year when we played so
many close games? I have to think that in the end, even though I am in
the cardiac ward, it will stand us in good stead come tournament time.

No TV coverage limits me, but it seemed as if the two Mikes gave us a
lift off the bench. Monserez had the minutes and the points, but it
sounded as if Mike Moore had a solid effort as well. I know he will
occasionally make an assignment mistake, but I always like a guy who busts
his tail, and it seems as if he tries hard every time. We need to
continue to look for ways to work the reserves in the game, and not just
because of illness, injury or foul trouble.

Game #2 of our revenge trifecta is Saturday, we have to go out and
attack from the opening whistle. I'm sure they will have a good crowd,
although given the size of the Nut House I can't imagine a sell out.
Hopefully they won't shoot the lights out from beyond the arc as in the 2
OT heartbreaker in Hinkle. To their credit they made a lot of deep and
contested shots in that game, I'm betting they can't do it twice.

Gritty win in a difficult environment, that's what it's all about in
league play, let's keep on rolling and come home with another big revenge
win. Go Dogs!
