DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Butler avenged its first loss of the season exactly one month ago by defeating the Wright State Raiders, 72-57, at the Nutter Center. The Bulldogs made sure that the Raiders would get nowhere near the 90 points they scored at Hinkle in double-overtime, holding WSU to 20 first-half points while scoring 30 themselves. The Raiders nearly doubled their first half output in the second 20 minutes with 37 points, but Butler scored 42 of their own to keep the Raiders from ever seriously challenging.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Darnell Archey. The sharpshooting junior has been battling both sickness and a shooting slump, but broke out in a big way today. He nailed all three of his 3-point attempts, and added a floater with the shot clock winding down to finish with 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting. You could see him loosen up as soon as that first shot fell, and he looked much more confident shooting the ball today than he has in quite a while. Hopefully DA can build off of this and provide us with the spark off the bench we've come to expect from him as we head down the home stretch in HL play.

A pair of Bulldogs shared scoring honors for the afternoon. Rylan Hainje finished with 18 points and five rebounds, and fellow senior Thomas Jackson also had 18 points along with six assists and four steals and just one turnover in 35 minutes. Joel Cornette had yet another double-double, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Brandon Miller added 12 points, and Mike Monserez had a basket for two points. Walk-on Nick Gardner pulled down five rebounds in 14 minutes of solid play. WSU was led by Cain Doliboa's game-high 22 points.

There are a lot of positives to take from this game: Archey's re-emergence, defense (forcing 15 turnovers and only allowing WSU 33 shot attempts), rebounding (BU 34, WSU 20), and assist-to-turnover ratio (14-to-7) to name a few. Butler now has 20 wins, which marks the sixth straight year with 20 or more victories. They're now a very impressive 14-1 away from Hinkle Fieldhouse, having just finished a three-game road sweep. With four of their last six games at home, the Bulldogs are in great position to reclaim the top spot in the HL. It won't be easy, but they seem to be out of the funk they were in during the 3-3 start and back to playing Butler basketball.

First UWM, then WSU...now the only loss left to avenge is at Detroit, who just so happens to be Butler's next opponent. The Titans come to town on Thursday, February 7, at 7 p.m. EST. The game will be televised locally in Indianapolis on Butler's television station, WTBU channel 69. Hope to see you there.

WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
Now THAT'S The Butler Way, players all over the floor, hustling for
boards, taking charges, good ball movement that breaks down the defense,
just a solid effort all around. Perhaps the most satisfying part for me
was the great bench play, just what we needed, good D, timely shooting,
hustle and energy that provided a spark. Only a couple of minutes for
Moore, but something tells me he would have put a solid body on Seth
Elboa given the chance. Archey looked like his old self, and I loved to
see him get his first bucket inside of 25 feet, that seemed to set him
up for the rest of the game. Gardner continues to impress, not flashy
but goes after the boards. That's right, he didn't wait for the ball
to fall in his lap, he WENT AFTER the pumpkin. Great effort by almost
the entire team.

This is starting to look like one of our late season runs into the
tournament, and I would love to see a big crowd on Thursday for round three
of the revenge series. I know that 8-9K is too much to ask, but if we
could get a couple of thousand above loyalist level that would be
great. We are 20-3 for crying out loud, have we ever reached 20 wins faster
before? Somebody with a stat book help me out with that one. By the
way, is it possible to send Rylan back to Terminator HQ and just get a
new ankle fused on? Anybody who has ever done their ankle knows that he
has been playing like a man for the last month with his injury. Trust
me I do not have stock in the Mike Moore Futures Corp., but exactly
what would happen if that kid got the start? I think that given twenty
minutes he could grab half a dozen boards and might hang around the hoop
long enough to help on D and maybe even get a couple of put backs on
the other end. Just a thought.

Had to work or I would have been in the Nut House, but I was listening
to CD and watched the tape late last night. At least Kaplan didn't
crack on us too hard as at UIC, but I was left wondering what Miller's
face would look like if Elboa had connected. The zebras didn't say a word
to him after that play, which is how things repeatedly get out of hand
in the Sunset League. Can we start a fund to bring in some decent refs
for next year? Let's finish up our revenge trifecta in style with a
big win in the barn on Thursday. Go Dogs!!!
