DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Butler rebounded well from its loss Thursday at Detroit by defeating the Youngstown State Penguins, 68-50. The two teams played back and forth for the bulk of the first half, with Youngstown taking a six-point lead at 19-13. Butler went on a 13-2 run to lead by 5 at 26-21. Things were knotted up at 30 apiece with about a minute to go, then Butler took over the game. A Mike Monserez three-pointer (his fourth of the first half) gave Butler a 33-30 lead, then Brandon Miller made a steal and a lay-up at the buzzer to give the Bulldogs a 35-30 advantage at halftime. Two Thomas Jackson lay-ups and a Miller trey pushed the lead out to 42-30 to start the second frame, capping a 12-0 run that bridged the two halves. A YSU basket cut the lead to 10, but that's as close as the Penguins would get as an 8-0 Butler run put the Bulldogs in command at 50-32. The margin would swell to as much a 21 at 59-38, but a 7-0 run by Youngstown cut it to 14 at 59-45. Butler scored five straight points, effectively ending any hopes of a Penguin comeback, and cruised to a 68-50 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Monserez. Monz drilled four big three-point baskets in the first half and energized the offense, the last of which started the decisive 12-0 run. Although he was held scoreless in the second half, his 12 first-half points really helped put the Bulldogs in command. He also dished out three assists.

Rylan Hainje had his first double-double of the season, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He also had two assists and two steals. Jackson had 11 points, four steals, and six assists. His final assist of the game, which led to a Scott Robisch jumper, tied him with Tim Bowen for the all-time assist lead at Butler with 471. His next assist, presumably Thursday at Hinkle, will make him Butler's career assist leader, further solidifying his status as the best point guard in modern Butler history, and perhaps ever. Robisch finished with 10 points and 5 rebounds, and Miller had 10 points and 4 rebounds. Joel Cornette added nine points and seven rebounds. Rob Walls added a pair of free throws off the bench for two points. YSU was led by Ryan Patton with a game-high 16 points.

Granted, Youngstown is one of the worst-rated teams in the nation. But after a frustrating loss at Detroit on Thursday, Butler fixed a lot of problems from that game tonight. After dishing only six assists as a team at Detroit, the Bulldogs had 15 tonight, evidence of better ball movement and shot selection on offense. They forced 18 turnovers while only committing seven themselves. They outrebound the Penguins 37-35 after getting killed on the boards Thursday. The defense held YSU to just 20 second half points and 39% for the game, including just 2-of-11 from 3-point range. There are still things to work on--3-point shooting (6-of-21 for 29%) and free throw shooting (8-for-15 for 53%) jump out immediately--but the Bulldogs played much better all-around tonight, and got back to playing Butler basketball.

A much-needed homestand awaits the Bulldogs when they return to Indianapolis, with the next three games at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Wisconsin-Green Bay is up first. Game time is Thursday, January 17, at 7 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.

WarDog from Indianapolis, IN:
Back on track, turnovers down, assists up, rebounds even, defense
turned up a notch, feeling better. Not completely dominating against a weak
opponent, but hopefully we are finding our legs again after a rough
patch. There won't be a ranking number attached to our Dogs when they
come back home, but I would love to see another big crowd turn out to
support them. Despite the recent toe stubbing, we are having a hell of a
year and we have a hell of a team, the best in the state by my
reckoning.

My only complaint tonight is about Mike Monserez. It's certainly
nothing negative about his play as he hit some huge threes in the first half
tonight and is the kind of big physical guard that is going to be a
handful for BU opponents for the next 2 1/2 years. My lone bitch is the
nickname that he has been tagged with. I find it hard to imagine that
he enjoys having a nickname that from an anatomical standpoint nearly
equates to pu**y. At least they aren't calling him Monz Venus. Maybe
I'm off base here, and I'll admit it's a thin beef, but surely we can
come up with something more appropriate.

Ending on a positive note, I can't wait to get back in the barn and
serve up those cheeseheads. If you had told me before the season that
we'd be 15-2, I would have taken it in a heartbeat. Now let's get on one
of our patented Sunset League winning streaks and take this thing home.

Go Dogs!!!!
