PLAYER OF THE GAME: Duane Lightfoot, Jr. Duane continues to provide a huge spark off the bench, and after this game is the team's leading scorer. He finished with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, and pulled down five rebounds. He also added a pair of steals. The inside presence and hustle he brings into the game cannot be overstated.
Three Bulldogs joined Duane in double-figures. Mike Monserez had a solid game, finishing with 13 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. He also had six turnovers, but a couple of those were on offensive fouls. Brandon Miller finished with 12 points, two steals, and four assists with just one turnover in 30 minutes. Joel Cornette added 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Freshman Bruce Horan was a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range for nine points. Lewis Curry finished with seven points, and Darnell Archey added three points. Ball State was led by Echols' double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds, both game-highs.
The Bulldogs dominated the Cardinals in nearly every facet of the game, except rebounding, where BSU had a 37-32 advantage. Butler outshot Ball State 52% to 31% for the game, had 18 assists to the Cardinals' six, and committed 11 turnovers while forcing Ball State into 12. Chris Williams, who entered the game leading the Cardinals in scoring at 27.7 ppg, was held to just nine points on 3-of-15 shooting. Both coaches mentioned their respective team's game plan heading into the game, but only one was pleased with his team's execution of said plan afterwards. BSU coach Tim Buckley noted that they spent three straight days going over Butler's offensive sets, but did not execute what they had worked on. Buckley noted that Butler "beat us physically, mentally; they out-toughed us, they laughed at us." He was displeased with what he termed "a lack of heart" from his squad. Butler coach Todd Lickliter was pleased with his team's willingness to defend as a team, commit to a game plan, and play to its strengths. "Any time you beat a team you respect like Ball State, you're satisfied," Lickliter noted. He wasn't sure how Ball State would react to losing Theron Smith, but he knew it would be a hard-fought game, and was pleased that the Bulldogs met that challenge.
The Bulldogs continue the in-state portion of their schedule with a pair of road games this week. Up first is Royce Waltman's Indiana State squad. Game time in Terre Haute is Thursday, December 5th, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
