Neither team led by more than two in the first overtime. CSU's Pape Badiane scored six points in the first extra session, the last two coming with around a minute left in overtime to give CSU a 68-67 lead. Avery Sheets missed a three-pointer, but the rebound bounced off a Viking and Butler retained possession. The Bulldogs chose to hold for one shot, and Miller drove and drew a foul on Andre' Williams. But Brandon could only get the second free throw to drop, and CSU had 5.3 seconds to move 94 feet for a last-second shot. But Lightfoot stole the inbounds pass with a tip to Miller, who pump-faked his man in the air and tried to draw a foul as he attempted a three-pointer, but was unable to get the whistle or the basket, and it was on to a second overtime.
CSU scored the first two baskets to take a 72-68 lead, but Darnell Archey buried back-to-back three-pointers to put the Bulldogs up 74-72. Coles answered with a three of his own, but Miller buried a three-pointer from beyond NBA range to give the Bulldogs a lead they would not relinquish at 77-75. Miller took a charge at the other end with 50.8 seconds remaining. Brandon missed a jumper with the shot clock winding down, and CSU called timeout with 12.6 seconds to go. Coles missed his jumper, and Miller pulled down the rebound and was fouled intentionally. Brandon sank both free throws, and Butler inbounded the ball to let the final 1.3 seconds tick away, and escaped with a hard-fought 79-75 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. The last minute of the game tells you all you need to know about Brandon Miller. He hit the game winning three-pointer from well beyond the arc, took a charge, rebounded the opposition's final shot attempt, and clinched the game with a pair of free throws. He finished with a game-high 23 points along with four assists and a pair of steals. But perhaps even more impressive was the fact that he did not commit a single turnover in a game-high 47 minutes of playing time. An incredible effort from Brandon.
Lighfoot finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Sheets tied his career-high with 14 points to go along with two steals. Archey added 10 points, and fellow senior Cornette finished with eight points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Mike Monserez had yet another solid all-around effort, with six points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Lewis Curry and Mike Moore finished with two points each. CSU was led by Niakate's 22 points.
What an incredible game--neither team gave up when the other seemed to take control, and both squads left everything on the floor when it was all said and done. There were some impressive individual efforts: along with the aforementioned performances, Badiane very nearly had a triple-double with eight points, 11 rebounds, and an amazing seven blocked shots. After the heartbreaking loss the Bulldogs suffered here to UWGB in the HL tournament last season, it was good to see them persevere, overcome deficits and scoring droughts, and come away with a victory. With the win, the Bulldogs clinch one of the top two seeds in the HL tournament, assuring them a bye to the semi-finals, and also climb back into a tie with Wisconsin-Milwaukee for first place.
The Bulldogs return home for the final two games of the regular season when the Wisconsin contingent of the Horizon League comes to town. Up first is the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix. Game time is Thrusday, February 27, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised locally in Indianapolis on WTBU channel 69.
