The Bulldogs took the lead for good on a Brandon Miller basket at the 17:09 mark to lead 34-33, and pushed their lead out to as many as nine at 49-40. An 8-1 Viking run made it 50-48 with 9:24 to go. A Duane Lightfoot, Jr. basket made it 52-48, and then came the turning point in the game. CSU's Modibo Niakate was called for an intentional foul for pushing Mike Monserez to the floor at the 7:00 mark. Monserez sunk both free throws, and both teams headed to their respective benches for a media timeout. One of CSU's numerous assistant coaches was yelling at the officials during the timeout, and earned a technical foul for his efforts. Darnell Archey made both technical free throws, and the Bulldogs retained possession. A Brandon Miller layup off the inbounds play made it a 6-point swing for the Bulldogs, and following a pair of missed free throws by Niakate, Lewis Curry nailed a three-pointer to make it 61-48. CSU would get no closer than 10 over the final six minutes, and the Bulldogs cruised to a 73-57 victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. The Vikings made the mistake of getting Miller mad, and he made them pay. With 13:14 to go in the second half, Miller was fouled by Jermaine Robinson after attempting a three-pointer and was knocked to the floor. He and Robinson got tangled up, and when the dust settled, a double-technical foul was whistled on both players. Miller then made back-to-back three-pointers on Butler's next two possessions. He finished with a game-high 22 points along with four rebounds and three steals.
Monserez had yet another great all-around game, finishing with 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Lightfoot added 12 points, three rebounds, and three steals off the bench. Joel Cornette also had a solid game, with nine points, team-highs of six rebounds and six assists, and a pair of blocks. Archey also had nine points, and Curry added six. Nick Gardner hit a trey for three points. CSU was led by Coles' 19 points.
The Bulldogs looked like they may have had a bit of a "Duke hangover" in the first half. That, combined with a determined effort from the Vikings, put the Bulldogs behind for much of the opening frame. But better efforts both on defense and rebounding, coupled with Miller's spark, helped put Butler in control of the game. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Vikings 14-6 in the second half and 24-23 for the game. They forced 15 CSU turnovers and committed just 10 themselves. Another number in Butler's favor was free throw percentage: CSU was 8-for-17 from the line (47%), while the Bulldogs were 16-for-18 (89%).
Having reached the halfway point in conference play, the Bulldogs get a well-deserved week's rest between games. The UIC Flames come to Hinkle for an important match-up between the league's top two teams. Game time is Saturday, February 8, at 6:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on FoxSports Midwest and FoxSports Chicago. Hope to see you there.
