DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs won at Calihan Hall for the first time since 1999 as they defeated the Detroit Titans, 66-63. No current Bulldog had experienced a win in Detroit as a member of the active roster prior to tonight's game (Mike Moore and Lewis Curry sat out as redshirts in 1998-9). Detroit led for most of the first half, pulling out to an eight-point lead at 24-16 with around six minutes to go in the opening frame. Willie Green continued to put up big numbers, scoring 16 points in the first half. But the Bulldogs went on a 21-9 run, keyed by three three-point baskets from freshman Avery Sheets, to head into the locker room with a 37-33 lead.

The Bulldogs led for much of the second half, but the Titans kept themselves within striking distance. A conventional three-point play by Elijah Warren gave them a brief one-point lead, but the Bulldogs soon regained the advantage. The Bulldogs led by two at 62-60 when Duane Lightfoot, Jr. was fouled on a layup attempt. He calmly sank both his free throws, making it a two possession game at 64-60 with 10.6 seconds remaining. It's a good thing he did, because Jimmy Twyman nailed a three-pointer from the right wing with Darnell Archey in his face to make it 64-63 with just over five seconds to go. Butler inbounded the ball to Lightfoot, and he was quickly fouled. Once again, Duane hit both free throws to push the lead back out to three. Detroit inbounded, and since the Bulldogs only had four team fouls at the point, Brandon Miller fouled Green to force the Titans to inbound the ball again and burn up a couple more seconds. Green took the inbounds pass just past half court and immediately turned and threw up a desperation three-pointer, but it bounced away and the Bulldogs prevailed, 66-63.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Joel Cornette. JC had his second double-double in three games, finishing with 15 points and 11 rebounds. His presence underneath helped open up the perimeter attack, and he played very good defense in the post.

Lightfoot finished with 14 points, and Sheets added 12 off the bench. Archey nailed three treys for nine points, and pulled down six rebounds, including a key offensive board late in the game after Lightfoot missed a three-pointer with the shot clock running down. Mike Monserez had eight points and three assists. Brandon Miller added five points and seven assists with just one turnover. Lewis Curry hit a trey for three points. Detroit was led by Green's 23 points and eight rebounds.

It was good to see the Bulldogs bounce back from a disappointing loss Thursday. They responded well, and didn't let an eight-point deficit in the first half rattle them. Sheets was huge in the first half, Lightfoot in the second half, and Cornette in both halves. And while it sounds weird to say that Green scored "only" 23 points, it's certainly a far cry from the 41 he dropped on Wright State just two days earlier. A big win for the Bulldogs, and hopefully one on which to build some momentum as they hit the stretch run in conference play.

The Bulldogs return home for a game before heading back out on the road next weekend. Up next are the Wright State Raiders. Game time is Thursday, February 20, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised locally in Indianapolis on WTBU channel 69.
