The Bulldogs finally seemed to hit their stride with an 11-0 run that gave them a 39-29 lead, but Detroit then rattled off seven unanswered points to get right back into the game. The Titans couldn't quite catch the Bulldogs, but they stayed within striking distance. A Duane Lightfoot, Jr. putback gave the Bulldogs a 51-44 lead with around 3:00 remaining. Green buried a three-pointer, and Cornette scored off a Lightfoot miss to make it 53-47 with two minutes to go. Green answered with another three-pointer which Darnell Archey was unable to match at the other end. Green scored on a layup to close within one at 53-52. Cornette's layin with 0:55 left gave the Bulldogs a little breathing room at 55-52. Terrell Riggs was called for traveling as he shuffled his feet on the way to the basket at the other end. That gave Butler the ball with under 35 seconds to go, which meant that Detroit had to foul in order to have a chance to get the ball back. Darnell Archey had the ball for much of the next 20 seconds, and the Titans didn't want to put a 97% free throw shooter at the line, nor did they want Green to pick up his fifth foul. Brandon Miller called a timeout in the corner to avoid a turnover, and Lightfoot was fouled on the inbounds with 9.7 seconds showing on the clock. It was a one-and-one, so Duane needed to hit the front end to make it a two possession game. He did just that, but missed the second. Butler had a foul to give, so Cornette committed a foul with 5.1 seconds left to force Detroit to burn up more clock. Green nailed a deep three-pointer with 2.2 seconds remaining to make it 56-55. After a timeout, the Bulldogs were able to get Archey the ball, and Green was forced to foul with 0.1 seconds left. Archey nailed both free throws, and the Bulldogs advanced to the finals with a 58-55 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Cornette. With the perimeter attack struggling and Miller still suffering from a deep chest cold, it was up to JC to lead the way. He responded with 19 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. He was also a perfect 8-of-8 from the floor.
Mike Monserez put together yet another impressive stat line, finishing with eight points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Miller had 12 points and a pair of assists in 27 minutes. Lightfoot added nine points and five rebounds. Archey finished with five points, Avery Sheets added three off the bench, and Lewis Curry had two. Detroit was led by Green's 21 points.
Cornette and Lightfoot were huge for the Bulldogs, as they combined for 17 of Butler's 19 first half points. Monserez' effort on the boards helped limit the Titans to six offensive rebounds, and helped the Bulldogs win the battle of the boards, 31-28. Butler outscored Detroit 15-2 at the free throw line.
The Bulldogs will face Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Tuesday for the Horizon League Championship and a trip to the big dance. Many pundits say that Butler is in regardless of how they do in the finals, but after last season, I'm quite certain the Bulldogs don't want to leave anything in the hands of the selection committee. Game time is Tuesday, March 11, at 7:00 p.m. EST in Milwaukee. The game will be televised live on ESPN.
