DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs found out first hand just how tough Duke is at home as the #5 Blue Devils cruised to an 80-60 victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Butler stayed within striking distance for much of the first half. They were within six at 26-20 when Duke went on a 6-0 run to lead at halftime, 32-20. The Bulldogs shot reasonably well from three-point range in the first half (36%), but could only manage 4-of-19 from inside the arc, missing numerous layups and having several other shots altered by Duke's front line. The Bulldogs shot 27% overall from the field in the opening frame, while the Blue Devils hit at a 43% clip.

Duke's Dahntay Jones converted a rare four-point play after getting fouled on a made three-point attempt on the opening possession of the second half. That pushed the Duke lead to 16 before the Dawgs even touched the ball in the second half, and while they never gave up, it proved to be too big of a hole to climb out of. The Blue Devils won going away, 80-60.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Darnell Archey. DA followed a quiet first half with 12 points in the second 20 minutes, finishing with a team-high 14 for the game. He hit three treys, and converted all three free throws after getting fouled on another three-point attempt.

Brandon Miller and Joel Cornette added 12 points apiece. Cornette also had team highs of seven rebounds and three assists. Mike Monserez added eight points and five rebounds. Duane Lightfoot, Jr. and Lewis Curry each finished with six points, and Avery Sheets had a late layup for two points. Duke was led by Jones' 25 points and Shavlik Randolph's double-double of 24 points and 10 rebounds.

If you would have told me before the game that Butler would force more turnovers than they committed, I would have felt pretty good about our chances. The Bulldogs did a great job of taking care of the ball, committing just 10 turnovers--right at their average, and nine below what Duke's opponents had been committing per game. But the swing from 26-20 towards the end of the first half to 36-20 after Duke's first possession of the second half proved to be the difference. The Bulldogs held J.J. Redick (16.8 ppg coming into the game) to six points and Chris Duhon (9.2 ppg) scoreless. But the one-two punch of Jones and Randolph more than made up for the offense Duke lacked from Redick and Duhon.

With the Duke game out of the way, the Bulldogs must regroup and dive back into Horizon League play. Fortunately for Butler, its next two games are far away from Cameron, back at home in the friendly confines of Hinkle Fieldhouse. First up are the Cleveland State Vikings. Game time is Saturday, February 1, at 4:00 p.m. EST. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE START TIME HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK FROM 2 P.M. TO 4 P.M. The game will be televised locally in Indianapolis on WTBU-TV channel 69. Hope to see you there.

WarDog in Indy:
Butler played their hearts out against Duke, the kind of effort that
makes me proud to be a fan of the team. I didn't have any illusions about
winning at Cameron, but I did expect our team to give their all and represent
the school in a positive manner, and as usual, they delivered.

Coach Collier was fond of saying that he demanded two things from his players,
that they play with humility and with respect for the opponent. I think a
careful examination of the Butler/Duke game reveals two teams that did just
that. The fact is, we probably win one game out of ten against Duke at their
place, but that didn't stop either team from giving their best effort.

I know that many Butler fans realize just how lucky they have been to have great
coaches and players represent the school on the court and in the community for
most of the last two decades. On many trips home from Hinkle I have remarked
that as long as the players leave it all on the court and conduct themselves as
gentlemen off the court that I will always support them, win or lose. In this
day and age of talk radio and internet boreds, there is such a climate of
hyper-criticism that I wonder if anyone is ever allowed to lose a game? So
many demand perfection from others, and I am left to wonder how they themselves
would fare under such a withering attack? I'm quite sure that the the team was
crushed by the loss at Duke, but I would imagine that their reaction will not be
some mindless carping and bitching on an anonymous venue. Rather, they will
lace them up and get after Cleveland State and attempt to add another win to
their record through hard work and sacrifice.

I have been so impressed with Coach Lickliter, he is a true gentleman and
obviously someone who cares not only a great deal about performance on the
court, but about his role as the shaper of men. His words and actions reveal a
person proud of the heritage of the school, and someone who seeks to only add
lustre to the reputation of Butler. The temporary glory of "Top 25" rankings
and the ludicrous measuring stick of the RPI will soon fade, but people will
remember the quality and character of the people in the program forever. Coach
K did not schedule the game becauase of any ranking or statistic, he did so
because Butler has demonstrated that they are a first class basketball program
that can compete with the best in every important category.

I hope that there is a good crowd at Hinkle on Saturday and that they show their
appreciation for this team, it's one that every fan can take pride in following.

Go Dogs!!!!
