DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame foul trouble and a determined comeback attempt by the home team as they defeated the Evansville Aces, 77-64. Butler led 13-11 at the 14:18 mark of the first half before going on a 13-0 run. They led by as much as 19 at 43-24 after a Lewis Curry 3-pointer, and took a 17 point lead into the locker room, leading 44-27. Butler forced 13 Evansville turnovers in the first half, including nine straight at one point. But the Aces weren't going down without a fight, and scored the first six points of the second half to get within 11 at 44-33. A pair of Ian Hanavan free throws got the Aces to within seven at 51-44, but a pair of Darnell Archey free throws after a technical foul on Evansville's Deywane Lee, followed by an Avery Sheets 3-pointer, pushed the Bulldog lead back to double figures. Butler led 70-57 after Joel Cornette hit a free throw, but the Aces hit back-to-back 3-pointers by Jordan Watson and Clint Cuffle and added a Watson free throw to pull within six with just over two minutes to play. But Cornette passed up an easy dunk at the other end and instead fed Archey for a deep 3-pointer, which Darnell buried. Brandon Miller hit a free throw to put the lead back up to 10 at 74-64, and following an Evansville turnover, Mike Monserez hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Archey. Darnell finished with a game-high 17 points, and added a career-high five assists along with three steals and no turnovers in 30 minutes. He was also a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, giving him 55 makes in a row. The NCAA record is 73 straight by Villanova's Gary Buchanan during the 2000-2001 season.

Four of Butler's five starters finished in double digits, and the fifth was just two points short. Monserez hit four 3-pointers en route to 15 points for the game. Miller finished with 14 points. Curry broke out of an offensive slump with three 3-pointers and a pair of free throws for 11 points. Cornette added eight points, eight rebounds, and three steals despite being limited to just 22 minutes with foul trouble. Duane Lightfoot added seven points and three steals off the bench, and Sheets finished with five points. Hanavan and Dan Lytle had 14 points each to lead Evansville.

The final rebounding numbers look ugly (35-21 Evansville), but that was due in large part to Butler's front line being in foul trouble for much of the game. Cornette, Curry, and Lightfoot each finished with four fouls, and Monserez had three. Nick Gardner did a nice job when called upon, providing quality minutes off the bench, as did Bruch Horan. Butler's defense was impressive--although Evansville managed to shoot 55% for the game (the first Butler opponent to eclipse 50% this season), Butler forced the Aces into 17 turnovers, 13 coming off of steals. Butler committed just six turnovers.

The Bulldogs return home for one game at Hinkle before heading on the road again next Saturday. The Bradley Braves come to town on Tuesday, December 10, at 7:30 p.m. EST. The odd start time is due to the game being televised back in Peoria. Hope to see you there.
