DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held the visiting Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix to 31% shooting for the game en route to a 58-37 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Neither team had much success offensively in the first half, with Butler shooting 29% and UWGB 31%. Green Bay's Mike King scored a basket 19 seconds into the game, but it would be over four minutes before another point was scored. Darnell Archey finally put the Bulldogs on the board with a three-pointer at the 15:20 mark. It was 10-10 with 10:21 to go when Brandon Miller nailed three three-pointers to key an 11-2 Butler run. But the Phoenix responded by holding the Bulldogs scoreless over the final 4:27, scoring the final five points of the half to make it 21-17.

The second half was a different story offensively for the Bulldogs, but the shooting woes of the Phoenix continued. UWGB got to within one at 22-21 with 17:59 to play, but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. Butler reeled off eight straight points over the next three minutes and cruised to an easy win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Butler's defense. I know that's kind of lame, but the defense the Bulldogs played today was outstanding. One set from the first half really stands out in my mind. UWGB point guard Matt Rohde got a screen at the top of the key, and Duane Lightfoot, Jr. hedged and forced Rohde towards the Butler bench. Once Rohde's defender recovered, everyone on the strong side rotated perfectly, and Duane ran from in front of the bench all the way down to the weak side block just in time to tip an attempted entry pass out of bounds. That play epitomized Butler's team defense: every player knew his role and where he needed to be, and everyone was in position to prevent an easy basket.

Miller drained four three-pointers in the first half en route to a game-high 14 points. He also had three rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Joel Cornette had 12 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Lightfoot added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench. Archey finished with six points and a career-high seven rebounds. Avery Sheets and Mike Monserez finished with four points each. Lewis Curry added three points, and Andy Grunst hit a pair of free throws for two points. UWGB was led by Terry Parker's 12 points.

While Butler's offense struggled, the defense was constant throughout the game, and that made the difference. The 37 points by UWGB matched the season-low for points by an opponent--Butler also held Wayne State to 37 points in the home opener back in November.

This win, coupled with Wisconsin-Milwaukee's win over Wright State, sets the stage for the regular season Horizon League championship. With each squad at 13-2 in league play, Saturday's showndown at Hinkle is for all the marbles. Game time is Saturday, March 1, at 2:00 p.m. EST. It marks the final regular season home game for seniors Brandon Miller, Darnell Archey, Joel Cornette, Lewis Curry, Mike Moore, and Rob Walls. With tonight's win, that class is now the winningest class in Butler history. Come on out to Hinkle and congratulate these seniors on four great years of basketball!
