DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to an early 15-3 lead and cruised to a 96-64 victory over GT Express in exhibition play. The Express reeled off six straight points to close within six at 15-9, but that was as close as they would get for the rest of the game. I missed the first three-quarters of the game due to a prior commitment, and by the time I got there the game was well in hand. The thing that jumps out at me from the stat sheet is the performance of Butler's three true freshmen. Bruce Horan led the Bulldogs with 18 points, Avery Sheets added 15 points, four assists, and just one turnover in 23 minutes, and Jeff James added four points and five rebounds. James also showed his tremendous athleticism on consecutive plays, where he took the ball from about 15 feet out and glided to the basket for a dunk and was fouled, then went way up high to block a shot at the defensive end. You can see a Shockwave clip of the dunk here, thanks to Drew Waddell at ButlerBasketball.com. All three newcomers have shown in the preseason that they will be able to contribute when called upon.

Darnell Archey was Butler's other double-digit scorer, finishing with 14 points. Joel Cornette hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with six points. In all 12 Bulldogs scored, and all 15 players on the roster were able to see floor time. GT Express was led by Chansey Willis' 21 points. Willis also evidently fancies himself to be quite the comedian, and at one point offered to share his candid opinion of the referees with Chris and Ralph on the radio broadcast.

With the exhibition portion of the schedule now behind them, the Bulldogs have a little over a week of practice before the season officially gets underway. Butler will travel to IPFW to face the Mastodons, who are entering their first season of full-fledged Division-I play. The game will take place Friday, November 22, at 7:05 p.m. EST at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
