Both teams shot better in the second half, but the Bulldogs found their range from the three-point arc. Improved perimeter shooting, combined with an aggressive slashing attack by Cornette, made the difference. Butler shot 56% for the second half, including 50% from three-point range, while limiting UIC to 45% and no three-pointers. The Flames kept their deficit to single digits until a Cornette layup with 4:16 to go made it 50-40. UIC would get no closer than eight from that point on, and a Cornette jumper from just inside the three-point line put an exclamation point on a 61-47 Butler win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Cornette. The Flames were very aggressive defensively on Butler's guards, and that left JC with room to drive to the basket. He created many shots on his own, and was the recipient of several nice passes from the guards off the weave. Joel finished with game-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Brandon Miller joined Cornette in double-digits, finishing with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists. He is now four points shy of 1,000 for his Butler career. Darnell Archey sunk three treys for nine points. Duane Lightfoot, Jr. added eight points off the bench. Mike Monserez had six points, five rebounds, and three assists. Avery Sheets had a layup and a three-pointer on consecutive possessions in the second half to finish with five points, and Lewis Curry hit a three-pointer for three. UIC was led by Armond Williams' 15 points and eight rebounds.
There were lots of positives from this game. UIC had not lost a conference road game prior to this one. Martell Bailey, who came in leading the nation in assists, dished out a season-low three--his first game with less than six all season. Butler outrebounded the Flames 33-29, including 18-9 in the second half. The freshman Sheets showed his ability to take what the defense gives him. He beat Cedrick Banks (a preseason first-team all-HL selection) on a drive to the basket for a layup. On the next possession, Banks backed off a bit, and Avery drained a three-pointer over the top of him. He's going to be fun to watch over the next three years.
The Bulldogs embark on a difficult two-game road trip next week. The first stop is Chicago, IL, to face the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Thursday, February 13, at 8:00 p.m. EST.

When I walked into Hinkle I was afraid that the big crowd jinx would bite, but a great effort by the Bulldogs got us past a talented UIC squad. I suspect that some of the Flames' fans will occasionally quibble with Jimmy Collins' x's and o's, but just as at Illinois, he continues to recruit effectively. That is a talented bunch, and I feel pretty good about the fact that the Dogs swept the season series. The top three teams in the league this year could all make a good case for the Big Dance, regardless of the conference tournament results. I'll be at the Gentile Center on the 13th, but the UIC game at UWM that same night looks like it will be a good one as well. Great defensive effort by Butler, and especially fine work to limit Bailey and Banks. Armond Williams is a real force inside, the kind of bruiser that just about anyone would like on their team. The fact that Butler out rebounded them speaks volumes about the effort, because UIC sure looked physically bigger to me. The Dogs were active all night, on the floor, on the glass and finally gave the big crowd something to cheer about in the last half of the second period. It seemed like the fans were just waiting for a few threes to drop before really getting into it, and thankfully Arch and Sheets obliged them. Really nice minutes by Avery who continues to impress with his confidence and heady play. I know folks are disappointed that the O'Donnell kid went to NCSU, and I'd love to have any great player come to BU, but I'll bet that Sheets really comes into his own next year if they turn the keys over to him. Sheets let the game come to him and didn't press the issue, but when he had the opening, he drove right to the hoop, and when they backed up a bit on the next trip, he drained that three without hesitation. He looks like he has the quicks to stay with most guards in our league, but he did get rubbed off a couple of times, as Banks used the big screeners well. Maybe Monserez will make a copy of his key to the weight room and give it to Avery, with a few extra pounds of muscle he might make people around the league really start to take notice. A lot of people in my section get nervous when Joel brings the ball up the floor a lot or starts working the dribble beyond the arc, but there can be no argument that he was very effective at taking what UIC gave him. He repeatedly drove the lane and made them pay, finishing well and staying out of foul trouble for the most part. Let's not forget that he is not a natural post player, but he does what they ask him to do. His stat line was outstanding and I feel like his hair will only get better with each game. One of the best stats was 7,236, great to see the barn with a lot of fans. I hope that they saw enough to come back, and I'm seriously bumming that we only have three home games left. I'm sure it's a big lift for the players to have that kind of crowd, although it sure seemed like a lot more than seven grand to me, but I'm old and my eyesight is fading. Perhaps the greatest moment at Hinkle this year was seeing that kid knock down his lay-up, free throw, three ponter and then drain that half court shot with a laser guided missile. That sucker was never more than a foot higher than the rim and when it went in, my section came unglued. On the way home my wife copped to almost getting a bit teary when the dad came out and bear hugged his boy, what a great Hoosier hoops moment. Aren't we lucky to be able to see basketball in such a place as Hinkle? I've been to a lot of arenas, but nothing else has matched it for me, hopefully a little bit of that kid's mojo will be riding with the Dogs on the way up to Chicago and Detroit. They will need the extra juice to win at either the Gentile or Calihan, but as long as they continue to represent the school with hard work and good sportsmanship, in my book, they'll be winners. Go Dogs!!!
