DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs started the 2002-2003 season with a 69-53 victory at IPFW. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 15-3 lead with 13:20 to go in the first half, and seemed to be ready to cruise to an easy win, but the host Mastodons pulled back to within four at 23-19 at the 5:40 mark. The Bulldogs took a nine-point halftime lead when Brandon Miller drove to the basket for an unconstested layup out of a 30-second timeout.

The Bulldogs quickly jumped out to a double-digit lead they would never relinquish in the second half, thanks to consecutive 3-pointers from Miller, Lewis Curry, and Darnell Archey. The Butler advantage ballooned to as much as 23 at 69-46 before IPFW closed the game with a 7-0 run.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. His stat line is pretty impressive: 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting (2-of-3 from 3-point range), seven assists, four steals, and just two turnovers in 35 minutes. And no game with Brandon would be complete without him taking a couple of charges, which he did.

Butler had a very balanced attack, with four players in double figures. Archey buried five 3-pointers for a game-high 15 points in his first career start. Curry, also making his first start at Butler, added 13 points in front of his hometown crowd despite playing just 16 minutes due to foul trouble. Duane Lightfoot, Jr. provided a big spark off the bench in the first half, scoring 10 points in the opening frame en route to 12 for the game along with five rebounds. Joel Cornette finished with five points, six rebounds, and four assists, and Mike Monserez added five points and four boards. Ben Grunst had a field goal and a pair of free throws for four points, and Jeff James wowed the crowd with an acrobatic up-and-under layup and a thunderous dunk off an alley-oop from Archey for four points. IPFW was led by David Simon's 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

It was a sloppy game at times for Butler, but it gave coach Lickliter a chance to try out several different rotations and lineups and still come away with a 16-point win. The defense will get better. Lightfoot's play in the first half down low was very encouraging, not just on offense but on defense as well. Butler finished with 22 assists on 27 field goals.

The Bulldogs return home for a pair of games in the friendly confines of Hinkle Fieldhouse. First up is Wayne State. Game time is Tuesday, November 26, at 7 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
