DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held their second straight opponent to just 45 points as they defeated the Indiana State Sycamores 65-45 at Terre Haute. Butler defeated Ball State 71-45 last Saturday, and played similar stingy defense against the Sycamores, holding them to 27% shooting in the second half and 32% for the game. Butler took a 30-23 lead into the locker room following a first half in which neither team attempted a free throw. That changed in the second half, as ISU's tenacious perimeter defense forced Butler to put the ball on the floor and take it to the hole. This led to 21 free throws for the Bulldogs in the second half, of which they made 16. Two of those freebies came on a technical foul on ISU coach Royce Waltman. ISU just never got on track offensively, and while they played pretty solid defense, it just wasn't enough to beat the Bulldogs.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Miller. He had a fairly quiet first half, with just five points. But he appeared to exchange words with a couple of Sycamore players in the second half, and that seemed to fire him up. He scored 13 second-half points en route to 18 for the game, along with five rebounds, four assists, a steal, and just one turnover in 35 minutes of play. ISU made it a point to put pressure on the ball all the way up the floor, and Brandon handled it very well.

Mike Monserez had a solid game with 10 points and seven rebounds. Darnell Archey also finished with 10 points. Joel Cornette had nine points and seven rebounds, and Duane Lightfoot, Jr. had yet another fine performance off the bench, finishing with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting (which actually LOWERED his FG% for the year!) along with six rebounds. Bruce Horan hit a pair of three-pointers for six points, and fellow freshmen Avery Sheets and Jeff James added two points apiece. ISU was led by freshman David Moss' game-high 19 points.

The final margin wasn't indicative of how close the game was throughout most of the night. The Bulldogs pulled away after Waltman's T, but the Sycamores were within striking distance for most of the night. ISU played solid defense, but continues to struggle offensively. They also got very little production from their veteran players, as seniors Brian Giesen and Matt Broermann and junior Marcus Howard (all starters) combined for just two points in 66 minutes. The Sycamores did a good job on the offensive glass, finishing with 15 boards. Several times the Bulldogs had their hands on a rebound, only to have it bounce away or out of bounds. Butler still managed to win the overall battle of the boards, 31-30.

The Bulldogs finish up the in-state portion of their schedule with a road trip to Evansville on Saturday. New head coach Steve Merfeld (formerly of Hampton) has rejuvenated the Aces, and a trip to Roberts Stadium is never an easy game. Game time is Saturday, December 7th, at 3:00 p.m. EST.
