DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

A 25-point effort from preseason Horizon League Player of the Year David Bailey led Loyola to a 73-63 victory over the Butler Bulldogs in Chicago. The two squads played to a 33-33 tie at halftime, and were tied 47-47 when Loyola went on a 9-0 run to make it 56-47. Butler responded with an 8-0 run of its own, but would get no closer. The Ramblers went on to their second defeat of the Bulldogs at the Gentile Center in as many years, 73-63.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Joel Cornette. JC led the Bulldogs with 18 points, 16 coming in the first half. He also had seven rebounds, four assists, and a pair of blocks.

Duane Lightfoot, Jr. was the other double-figure scorer for the Bulldogs, finishing with 12 points off the bench. Mike Monserez had eight points and nine rebounds, and Darnell Archey added eight points. Avery Sheets finished with seven points off the bench, and fellow freshman Bruce Horan added six. Brandon Miller had four points and four rebounds. Besides Bailey, Loyola was led by Terrance Whiters' 14 points and Corey Minnifield's double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

I was unable to listen to the game, so I can't comment much beyond what's in the box score. Obviously our three-point shooters struggled, and that combined with a strong outing from Bailey spelled trouble. Butler shot 37% for the game and 26% from downtown, compared to 53% and 39% for Loyola. That pretty much sums it up.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Bulldogs, as a trip to Calihan Hall to face the Detroit Titans is up next. Game time is Saturday, February 15, at 6:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on FoxSports Midwest and FoxSports Detroit.

WarDog in Indy:
The loss at Loyola was a real tough one to swallow, as Butler went
down without as much fight as they generally show. There was a nice turnout of
Bulldog fans in the Gentile, but I'm afraid they were mostly quiet, as the Dogs
didn't give them just a whole lot to cheer about. The team seemed flat from the
start, in particular our normally stalwart senior guards. I thought that Joel
and Duane competed hard inside, and while it's a fact that Butler was
outrebounded, I would like to point out that even Miss Cleo could not predict
where some of those ugly caroms were going to go. Whenever we have played
Loyola in the Bailey era, I typically hold my breath and tell somebody else in
the stands, "He's going to throw up a lot of $hit tonight, let's hope it's not
falling" but last night, it was in fact, going in.

I'm no genius, but it seems to me that Butler normally plays nice team defense
against opponents that try and run a system, but that they are vulnerable to
individual attack. Well, with the brain trust on the Rambler bench (kind of
like a mid major IU) it's pretty much burn the shot clock and either jack up a
defended three or try and take your man off the dribble. To their credit,
Loyola knocked down enough of those threes and converted some drives (put back
usually required) when they had to get them and that was the difference on their
end.

As far as the Bulldog offense, it's no mystery that we are a perimeter team, and
last night the shots weren't going in. There were a couple of ill advised
takes, but by and large I thought the shot selection was decent, and if their
percentage was even within sniffing range of the average, my trip home would
have been a lot more fun. Joel was great all night, he really played hard, and
his back to back effort against UIC and Loyola this past was one of the best
one-two's I've ever seen from him. He was a bit of a victim of fate on two of
the fouls that really hampered his play. One time, Bailey ran up into him,
creating the contact in classic NBA style, and the other time Bailey was on his
hip, and when Joel went up for the board the little guy slid underneath him and
then fell down. To my eye, they were both no calls, but Bailey is a dangerous
player, and you have to know where he is at all times. I can think of at least
three buckets that the Ramblers converted right after Joel picked up his third
and fourth fouls, so while the officiating didn't decide the game, it sure
didn't do us any favors. I hate whining about the zebras, so I will sum up by
saying that, incredibly, Sanzere was the best of the three. Enough said.

I was at the game with an old friend from Chicago. He usually comes to one game
at Hinkle, and I go to either the Loyola or UIC game. He knows most of BU's
players, but I did have to give him some background with the remarkable
insertion of A Grunst in the first half. I don't know for sure if it was his
first time on the court, but it was certainly the first time I have seen him
play, and I have to say that I was encouraged. I have read a lot of negative
crap about the Brothers Grunst, and I may be eternally optimistic, but it looked
to me like he could play. He didn't really get pushed around, and actually got
a nice board in heavy traffic. I don't think he's any more of a threat to enter
the NBA draft pool this year than I am, but I hope he gets some more chances to
get out there and mix it up.

I didn't have the opportunity to hear Lick's post game, I was listening to the
Rambler wrap up, which was littered with more mis-information about the Butler
program than I would have thought possible to squeeze in a post game show.
However, from what I read in the $tar (yes, it's a cuss word) the coach accepted
some blame for the loss because of the substitution patterns. I agree that they
were at times a bit curious, but that's not why they lost. They lost because
Loyola hit well defended threes and broke down the guards off the dribble and BU
hit a woeful percentage of shots they normally make. I think it was legendary
coach Hinkle who opined that team that puts the ball in the hoop more is
typically the winner (sorry for the poor paraphrase) and that's what went down
in the Gentile Center in front of about 8-900 people. The Tribune had
attendance at over 3 grand, but I can confidently state that if that was true,
at least two thousand of those folks were cleverly disguised as empty seats.

My old coach used to tell me that a loss itself wasn't important as what you do
about it. I sure hope that the Dogs can rebound (literally and figuratively)
from a flat performance and bring a great effort against Detroit, because
they'll need it to salvage a split on the road trip. I am sorry to say that I
think they erased any hope of an at large bid last night, so all they can do now
is focus on winning out and taking home the bacon in the Horizon. I'm betting
that they can get it done.

Go Dogs!!!
