The second half started off slowly, with Minnifield and Curry exchanging 3-pointers to make it 49-32 at the 18:04 mark. That's when Minnifield took over. The Ramblers went on a 13-0 run, keyed by three more 3-pointers from Minnifield, who was a perfect 5-of-5 from behind the arc at that point. But he wasn't finished. A Darnell Archey 3-pointer ended the Butler scoring drought at the 13:40 mark, making it 52-45. It was 55-50 when the Bulldogs went on an 11-0 run, capped by another Archey 3-pointer, to make it 66-50 with 7:19 remaining. Minnifield canned his sixth straight from behind the arc to end Loyola's four-and-a-half minute dry spell, then buried two more bombs to make it 66-59. Butler continued to miss at their end, and Loyola continued to chip away at the lead. Minnifield finally missed his first field goal attempt (not surprisingly, a 3-pointer) at the 2:21 mark, but a pair of free throws from Paul McMillan pulled the Ramblers to within one at 66-65 with 2:07 to go. Butler ended a seven minute stretch without a point when Duane Lightfoot, Jr. connected on the second of two free throws to make it 67-65. A Joel Cornette steal gave the Bulldogs the ball with 42 seconds on the clock, but Mike Monserez missed a 3-pointer and fouled Minnifield on the rebound with 8 seconds left. Minnifield calmly sank both free throws around a Butler timeout, and the Bulldogs had time for one more play. But Monserez' pass to Archey in the corner for a game-winning 3-pointer went through Darnell's hands and out-of-bounds with 3 seconds on the clock. The Ramblers were unable to get a shot up off the inbounds play, and both teams headed to overtime knotted at 67.
McMillan buried a 3-pointer to make it 70-67, but a pair of Brandon Miller free throws pulled the Bulldogs back to within one. After a McMillan turnover, Avery Sheets hit a big jumper from just inside the 3-point arc to give Butler a lead it would not relinquish at 71-70. Back-to-back layups by Sheets and Miller pushed the lead to 75-70. Bailey hit one of two free throws, but the Ramblers could only manage one field goal (another McMillan 3-pointer) in five attempts over the final minute of overtime, and Monserez and Sheets combined for 6-of-6 at the free throw line to give the Bulldogs a hard-earned 81-74 overtime win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: I generally give this to a Butler player, even if an opposing player has a great game. But Minnifield's performance was simply amazing. His perfect 8-for-8 start, all on 3-pointers, helped him to a career-high 28 points to go along with five rebounds and three blocks. He finished 9-of-13 from the field, 8-of-12 from 3-point range.
Butler's player of the game was Sheets. He suffered a cut over his right eye after a collision with Whiters in the first half, requiring six stitches after the game. But he didn't let it bother his offense. He finished with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and his jumper and layup in overtime were a huge momentum swing for Butler. Five Bulldogs joined Sheets in double-figures. Curry finished with 13 points, and Lightfoot added 12 points and nine rebounds. Miller had 11 points and five assists, and Archey addded 11 points and four rebounds. Archey did not get to the free throw line tonight, so his streak still sits at 76 in a row. Monserez finished with 10 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Cornette had five points, limited to just four minutes in the first half due to foul trouble. Bruce Horan had a trey for three points, and Ben Grunst sunk a pair of free throws for two points. Mike Moore made his first appearance of the season after ankle surgery in November. He did not attempt a shot, but pulled down a rebound in three first-half minutes. Good to see Mike out there banging again.
The recent trend of second-half meltdowns is a concern, but I'll take the win. Loyola obviously adjusted their defense at halftime, and really disrupted the Bulldogs' offensive flow. The Ramblers' trapping in both full- and half-court sets forced Butler into several turnovers and rushed shots, and Loyola was able to turn them into points at their end. Loyola coach Larry Farmer mentioned afterwards that in the first half, his team was unable to match Butler's energy, lacking what he said his players call "bounce". He felt the press got his team "bouncy" again in the second half. But the Ramblers couldn't quite dig themselves all the way out of their first half hole, and the Bulldogs played a solid five minutes in overtime to get the win.
With UWM's loss at UIC tonight, the Bulldogs are the lone remaining Horizon League team still undefeated in conference play. They will put that 2-0 HL record to the test on Saturday, January 11, when the Detroit Titans come to town. The game starts at noon EST, and will be broadcast live on FoxSports Detroit. FoxSports Midwest will replay the game on tape delay at 8:00 p.m. EST that night. Hope to see you there.
