DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out quickly and never looked back as they put the clamps on the Saint Louis Billikens, 68-46. Butler held SLU to just four points in the opening ten minutes, and led 30-8 with around a minute remaining in the first half before taking a 30-12 halftime lead. SLU had just six first half field goals and shot 28.6% in the opening frame. The Billikens, spurred by 19 second half points from Marque Perry, performed better offensively in the second 20 minutes, but never seriously challenged the host Bulldogs. Butler scorched the nets at a 61% clip in the second half to keep SLU from closing the gap.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Darnell Archey. A vintage effort from DA, with four 3-pointers en route to 16 points. He also hit a pair of technical free throws, extending his streak to 64 in a row, just nine behind the NCAA record.

Two other Bulldogs joined Archey in double figures. Mike Monserez finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Joel Cornette added 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, and a pair of blocked shots. Brandon Miller overcame a tough first half offensively to finish with eight points and six assists. Lewis Curry and Duane Lightfoot, Jr. added six points apiece. Bruce Horan hit a 3-pointer for three points and pulled down four rebounds, and fellow freshman Avery Sheets also finished with three points. Jeff James had a layup for two points. Rob Walls didn't score, but played solid defense off the bench. SLU was led by Perry's 23 points.

This game was very similar to the Ball State game: Butler got out to a huge lead in the first half, and avoided a major letdown in the second half to cruise to victory. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Billikens 32-27, and had 15 assists to SLU's five. A very solid all-around effort by Butler.

The Bulldogs will now head to Hawaii for three games in the Rainbow Classic. Butler's first round opponent is Texas-Pan American. Game time is Saturday, December 28, at 10 p.m. EST.

WarDog from Indy:
Doesn't get much better for a diehard fan, a banner raised with
former greats in attendance, sunlight streaming though the windows of historic
Hinkle and a terrific all around performance by the Bulldogs. Once again, our
energy on the defensive end set the tone and by the time the Billikens looked up
it was just about over.

This was another great team effort from largely unheralded "role players" who
are simply dedicated to playing hard. I seem to remember that despite our
recent domination of the league, we didn't exactly fill up the pre-season all
star squads. You can keep your all stars, as long as we continue to give
maximum effort and conduct ourselves with humility and respect for our
opponents, I will be in a state of basketball bliss, and, ........ in my book,
we'll be winners.

I seem to remember a tough loss at Hinkle not long ago when the players had an
autograph session planned afterwards, and a fellow fan told me that when his son
attended, the Bulldogs were polite and friendly with the kids even in the face
of disappointment. It's easy to be Mr. Cool (Bloomington, hello) when you're
winning, but I for one have always been so proud of our deportment when faced
with adversity. People are now touting us (C. Jemal, welcome aboard the wagon)
since we're on another unbeaten streak, but Lavall and BC's gracious answers to
press conference questions after the crusher in Winston-Salem and Lick's classy
response to the slap in the face from the NCAA "selection" boys last year stand
out in my mind as being truly representative of the Butler Way.

I guess that I appreciate the quality of individual that we have been lucky
enough to have represent the university. How do you think Mike Davis would have
handled himself after the Florida game, or the snub by Lee Fowler's merry gang
of idiots? I'm not sure I want to know, but I do know that I'm awful pleased to
have this coach and these players. Can you imagine an IU player handling
himself with the class that we have seen from Sweet Lou Curry? These guys
understand what it means to sacrifice individual glory for the good of the team
and I love taking people to Hinkle and showing them off.

How satisfying is it to watch an obviously talented player such as D Lightfoot,
Jr. stay upbeat despite lack of minutes last year. He took a negative and
turned it into a positive, elevating his game and delivering a huge spark off
the bench, where he is most valuable to the team. Kind of like turning a
negative such as the Florida loss and turning it into a positive like the Wake
Forest win.

Can't wait to get back in the old barn for the Loyola game, I sure hope we do so
with the Rainbow Classic title in our bag. The way I figure it, if we go 1-0
three times, we'll get the job done.

Go Dogs!!
