DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

For the second consecutive season, the Butler Bulldogs are off to a 13-1 start, defeating the Detroit Titans 76-68 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. With the win, the Bulldogs move to 3-0 in Horizon League play and remain the only team undefeated in conference play. Butler jumped out to a 6-0 lead on 3-pointers by Mike Monserez and Lewis Curry. Detroit went on a 6-0 run of their own to tie the game back up, the first of six ties in the first half. It was 19-19 with 6:03 to go, then Butler closed the half on a 14-6 run to take a 33-25 halftime lead. The Titans held Butler to 39% shooting in the first half, but the Bulldogs were 11-of-12 from the free throw line.

Monserez scored the Bulldogs' first seven points of the half, helping to push Butler's lead to 15 at 44-29. Detroit began to claw their way back, using a 20-10 spurt keyed by eight straight points from Jimmy Twyman to cut the lead to five at 54-49 with 7:46 remaining. Terrell Riggs was fouled on a made layup to make it 56-51, but was unable to convert the free throw. A deep 3-pointer from Darnell Archey and a fastbreak layup by Joel Cornette quickly pushed the lead back to 10 points at 61-51, and the Butler lead stayed between seven and ten points over the final four and a half minutes.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Monserez. This is a no-brainer--Mike had a career-high 24 points on 8-of-9 shooting, along with team highs in rebounds (seven) and assists (four). He does so many things to help this team and make his teammates better, and this game was a perfect example of Mike at his very best. The touch he showed on his step-back fade-away jumper today was phenomenal.

Three other starters also finished in double-digits. Cornette had 15 points and three rebounds, and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Archey added 14 points, four assists, and three rebounds. He was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line, extending his NCAA Division-I record for consecutive made free throws to 82. Brandon Miller had a very efficient 10 points on the just four field goal attempts (making two) and 5-of-6 free throw shooting to go along with four rebounds. Avery Sheets finished with seven off the bench, and Curry and Duane Lightfoot, Jr. added three points apiece. Detroit was led by Willie Green's 23 points.

The big topic of conversation about the Bulldogs of late has been losing big second-half leads. And while the Titans were able to cut a 15-point second half lead down to five, the Bulldogs never panicked and kept their focus on running their offense and putting points on the board, keeping the Titans far enough behind to prevent them from seriously challenging for the lead over the final minutes. It was a very solid all-around effort by the Bulldogs against a tough opponent. They outrebounded the Titans 25-21, and outshot them at the free throw line 86% to 52%. They kept their turnovers down while making seven steals against the Titans, and recovered from a cold-shooting first half to connect at a blistering 65% clip after halftime. All in all, a great win for the Bulldogs.

Butler heads on a brief road trip to Dayton next Thursday for an HL matchup with Wright State before returning to Hinkle on Saturday for an equally short home stand. Game time at the Nutter Center against the Raiders is Thursday, January 16, at 7:00 p.m. EST. There is a fan bus heading to the game--call the Butler Ticket Office for details.
