![[THE RECORD BREAKER!]](../buarchey.jpg)
Butler pulled away slightly in the last couple of minutes of the first half, with Bruce Horan's 3-pointer at the buzzer giving them a 40-33 lead at the break.
The Bulldogs maintained a lead right around 10 points for the opening eight minutes, pushing their advantage to as many as 13 at 58-45 with 12:12 to go. It was 62-54 Butler when Joel Cornette was whistled for an intentional foul, his fifth personal of the game, with 6:13 remaining. Armond Williams hit both free throws, and Cedrick Banks scored on the ensuing possession to make it 62-58. Archey extended his record to 76 straight with a pair of free throws, then Williams converted another basket for UIC to make it 64-60 with 4:29 to go. After Mike Monserez missed a 3-pointer, UIC's Jonathan Schneiderman connected from beyond the arc to make it 64-63. Monserez missed a pair of free throws, and Banks missed a 3-point attempt at the other end. Brandon Miller was fouled and made one of two free throws to put Butler up by two at 65-63 with 2:31 remaining. But UIC's Martell Bailey would put back his own missed shot with just over 2:00 to go to tie things up at 65, capping a 20-7 UIC run. Archey missed a 3-pointer, but Monserez snared the rebound and called timeout as he was falling out of bounds with 1:44 to go. Lewis Curry missed a 3-pointer, and Monserez missed a put-back attempt. UIC called timeout as their shot clock wound down with 45 seconds on the game clock. Schneiderman missed a 3-pointer off the inbounds play, and Duane Lightfoot, Jr. grabbed the rebound. Miller found Monserez underneath, but his shot was blocked. Butler managed to get a timeout called in the scrum for the rebound with 21.1 seconds left. Lightfoot took a couple dribbles off the inbounds pass before the UIC timekeeper decided to start the clock again. Duane's shot bounced out, but Curry was there for a huge tip-in to put the Bulldogs up 67-65. Williams missed a tough turn-around shot in the lane, and Lightfoot pulled down the rebound and was fouled with 5.2 seconds remaining. Duane hit one of two free throws, and Schneiderman's off-balance 3-pointer at the buzzer bounced off the back of the rim, giving Butler a hard-fought 68-65 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Curry. Lew was in a bit of a slump, and needed a big game like this one to get him back on track. He led the Bulldogs with a career-high 17 points, including three 3-pointers, to go along with four rebounds. His big tip-in was the difference between UIC playing for a tie instead of a win in the final seconds.
Lightfoot continues to put up strong numbers off the bench, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds, and even hit his first career 3-pointer. Archey finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Cornette added nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists before fouling out. Miller had seven points, five assists, and four rebounds. Avery Sheets had five points, and fellow freshman Horan added three points. Ben Grunst provided four quality minutes off the bench, finishing with three points. Monserez also finished with three points. The Flames were led by Williams' double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds.
It was fairly evident that the Bulldogs hadn't quite gotten their legs back from the Hawaii trip, and were pretty tired towards the end of the game. They missed some free throws down the stretch that bounced off the front of the rim, and weren't able to get off the floor for shots and rebounds as high or as quickly as usual in a couple of instances. But they did enough to get a tough conference road win. They outrebounded the Flames, who came in with a +8.4 rebounding margin over their opponents, 38-35. They dished out 17 assists on 21 baskets. They got quality minutes from several different players off the bench. And they held Banks to just four points, 13 under his average, and kept Bailey in check as well (2-of-10 from the field).
The Bulldogs return to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a pair of HL games next week. Up first is preseason HL Player of the Year David Bailey and the Loyola Ramblers, who come to town on Thursday, January 9, for a 7:00 p.m. EST game. Hope to see you there.
