DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers used an 8-0 run late in the second half to hand the visiting Butler Bulldogs their first Horizon League loss, 69-65. Butler got out to a good start, thanks in large part to three big three-pointers from Lewis Curry. They held a 21-16 lead around the 12:00 mark, but the Panthers closed the half on a 20-9 run to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room. The Bulldogs, who came in leading the nation in fewest turnovers at just over 10 per game, committed 13 miscues in the first half.

The second half began much like the first half did, with the Bulldogs off to a good start. An 18-7 spurt gave the Bulldogs a 48-43 lead with 11 minutes to go, but Milwaukee answered countered with an 11-3 run to make it 54-51 Panthers. Darnell Archey knotted the game up with his only three-point goal of the contest, but that's when UWM made the decisive run. The Panthers reeled off eight unanswered points, and the Bulldogs called a timeout to gather themselves. Mike Monserez made one of two free throws, and UWM's Rob Sanders missed the front end of a one-and-one at the other end. Butler committed a turnover, but Dylan Page missed the front end of his one-and-one to keep the score at 62-55. Brandon Miller made a layup, and Joel Cornette drew a charge on Page to give Butler the ball back with 1:30 remaining. Archey missed a three-pointer, and Justin Lettenberger coverted a layin for the Panthers to make it 64-57. Miller converted a conventional three-point play to pull the Bulldogs within four at 64-60. Clay Tucker missed both of his free throws for UWM with 42.3 seconds to go, but Page hauled down a big offensive rebound and the Bulldogs were forced to foul again. Ronnie Jones made one of two attempts with 36 seconds remaining. Miller drew a foul on Page, but missed both free throws and the Panthers got the rebound. Page calmly sunk both of his foul shots to put UWM up 67-60 with 19.3 seconds on the clock. Miller drained a three pointer, and Jose Winston made one of two free throws to make it 68-63 UWM. Miller made a layup to put the Bulldogs within three at 68-65. Tucker was fouled again, and missed both free throws with 11.1 seconds to go. Butler got the rebound and worked the ball around to Bruce Horan for a potential game-tying three-pointer, but it was no good. Tucker hit the second of two free throws to seal the game for the Panthers, 69-65.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Miller. He did just about everything he could to put the Bulldogs in position to send the game into overtime, scoring Butler's last 10 points. He finished with a game-high 18 points along with four rebounds and four assists.

Curry drained five three-pointers for 15 points. Mike Monserez had 13 points and six rebounds before fouling out. Archey added eight points and six rebounds. Cornette finished with five points, Duane Lightfoot, Jr. added four points, and Jeff James had a field goal for two points. UWM was led by Tucker and Page, who had 17 points each.

The stat sheet tells the story for this game: 24 turnovers and 9-of-18 foul shooting. Improving on either of those numbers more than likely puts the Bulldogs on the winning side of the scoreboard. It seemed that many of the turnovers came not as a result of UWM's full-court pressure, but because of the Panthers' half-court defense. The Bulldogs shot 51% for the game and 50% from downtown, but it was the shots they didn't get due to turnovers that made the difference. Butler held UWM's three-point shooters to 32% for the game from behind the arc and outrebounded the Panthers 29-28, but Page's five offensive boards each seemed to come at an inopportune time for the Bulldogs. Give credit to the Panthers: they forced us into more than twice our normal turnover total, and were able to overcome some shaky free throw shooting down the stretch to get a big conference victory.

The Bulldogs look to avoid a Wisconsin sweep when they travel to Green Bay to face the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix. UWGB was the team that knocked the Bulldogs out of the HL tournament last season (and ultimately out of the NCAA Tournament), so hopefully the Dawgs will come in with a chip on their shoulders and avenge the heartbreak of last March. Game time is Saturday, January 25, at 2:05 p.m. EST.
